ive had this problem a thousand times (and so has everyone else) and i usually managed to muddle my way to a solution, but i finally found how to do it definitively. keep in mind the size may be changed later on by something, but this will last you as long as possible.

1. open a link that gives you a crappily-sized window.

2. close all windows other than the new one you opened

3. hold shift, r-click the taskbar, click either of the tile buttons. this brings the window as close to full screen as youre going to get.

4. Still holding shift, in the IE window click File>Close

thats as much as youre going to be able to do. its dumb that MS hasnt fixed this

On mine(6.0.2600 XP) you don't have to do all that. Just hold shift while resizing the last open window.

One thing I haven't figured out yet is how to make it remember to always include the status bar on all my windows, when I use Ctrl+n to open a new window.

open only ONE IE windows, have is MAXIMIZED and close it

now when you open it it will be maxamized

some goes with the "new" windows, have it open and maximize it, close it and the next time it will be maximized

or right click on the shortcut and change the run: maximized
