Fairly.

If you go for anime just because the new movie then you'll find yourself can't help loving it later.

I really liked Samurai X. And the animation is getting better and better so we can expect high quality movies from now :)

And there are animation movies way better than any movie: Madagascar was one great movie.

From what I've seen so far in this thread, anime is like Marmite, either you love it or you hate it. But what really annoys me is that when you mention the word 'anime' some people just think of children's cartoons, I don't think you would call 'Akira' or 'Elfen Lied' a kid's cartoon... :pinch:

Yeh - to everyone who thinks Anime = Pokemon...

Ghost in the Shell

and

Princess Mononoke

The above are fantastic.

Ghost in the Shell is a sci fi, fantastic storyline and some fairly nice philosophy (I'm no philosopher by any stretch of the imagination, I just think it sounds good and it makes you think...)

The background art is beautiful and the soundtrack fantastic, if the only thing you like in a film is action - well its got martial arts and big guns so...

Princess Mononoke is probably the first anime I really watched... well, as far as I can remember - may of seen Akira before - and it was fantastic, a magical storyline in a fantasy world with beautiful art all round and... just watch it.

One thing - a manga is kinda like a japanese comic book, but things like Akira have a massive burning manga logo that comes up in the bit where it shows things like twenty first century fox... is anime just used on more kiddy cartoons or what?

Oh - it may sound like it should be kiddy, but Cowboy Bebop surpised me. Its good. And if you want something less along the lines of the norm (action etc) try Tokyo Godfathers - for some reason in spanish or japanese (or cantonese I can't remember).

Just don't insult it till you've tried watching at least one of the best, Akira (15)- Princess Mononoke (pg or 12)- Ghost in the Shell (15), etc.

I love anime. My current favorite shows are One Piece, Monster, Full Metal Panic - The Second Raid, and Honey & Clover. I just read Naruto manga out of habit. If you want some awesome manga then I would suggest the Fullmetal Alchemist manga, it's so much better than the show :).

If you have only seen anime in english then don't judge it based on that. Dubbed anime is often mutilated beyond all possible recognition. And no its not hard to read subtitles, stop being lazy :p.

i don't mind some. i just saw an older hayao miyazaki film called nausicaa (nausicaa of the wind in america), it was from 1984 and quite good. i also just saw steamboy, by the same director as akira. akira was definitely better.

I watched Wolf's Rain when it was on CN. I thought it was great until the end [which seems to be the consensus among reviewers]. I wish there were more like it in a genre that seems mainly goofed down for a younger generation (at least all that i see).

You must not be looking hard enough... most of it is geared towards the 18-25 demographic.

good animes never get to US televisions. that's the only reason people here aren't aware the beauty of anime

FLCL, Ghost in the Shell, Trigun, Neon Genesis Evangelion (soon, my friends!), Fullmetal Alchemist, Cowboy Bebop ... There is some good anime that has been shown on TV here in the US... but indeed -- there is so much more.

I'd like to see what kind of reactions Great Teacher Onizuka would bring to people if it ever got really introduced state-side...
