benjaminzsj
Funny that your poll can be determined primarily by your avatar. :) Yes, anime was introduced by those who wanna give children a way of having fun and learning something at the same time, but after a long time evolution it's no longer for kids only and lesson we can learn from it is deeper. Monkeh
Good anime actually require some brain activity on your side. Production teams usually refrain from dumbing down content so that it can be understood by every six year old and their senile grandmother... unlike TV in North America. Sure, some anime is aimed towards the younger crowd, but there's tons of anime out there that aren't suitable for people with the intelligence of a ten year old (which seems to be the average intelligence of TV audiences here). sin-ergy
Why are people on a totally opposite spectrum when it comes to anime? Love or hate? No one's in the middle? There are plenty of "adult" animes out there. They're just as good as any comparable live action flick. The fact that they're animated adds a lot of flexiblity as to what can be done. I used to ADORE anime. Watched tons of episodes of various shows on a daily basis. I've somewhat fallen back due to the fact that I just don't have the time anymore. But hey, it's your opinion, so don't mind mine. I think most anime conserve the great art of storytelling and great profound characters. Most aren't just good or bad (cliche?), but shades of gray, which makes for great antagonistic heroes and villains. Most of them also have subtle dealings with social issues, as well as moral and religious. Thats why some people may find it disturbing or confusing. I have found that open-mindness, although not a requirement, is highly recommended to appreciate anime. And last, but not least, theres also the artistic vision of the writer or director of said anime. People seem to praise unique filmaking styles like of Quentin Tarantino and Brian de Palma, where most of the time, stories are told backwards, characters may have enhanced abilities, or plain weird things would happen. I think thats great, because these images stimulate reasoning. The same with anime, although people freak out at "moving backgrounds but still people", "Strong images of christianity", or just plain "blue, green or purple hair". It's really too bad that anime is so closely compared to american cartoons. While MOST anime's purpose is to sell a great story, most cartoon's making money. Evidence is in the poor-makings of modern american cartoons. Ugly simplistic drawings that seems the studio didnt want the artists to spend more than a day per episode so that they could be aired ASAP. Gone are the days when our young children could appreciate a well drawn cartoon, with stories carried on for at least another week. Strong compelling characters that they wished to emulate. All we are left is 3 retarded kids that always want to rip theire friends off (Ed, Edd & Eddy), an 11 year boy that has ADHD, loves violence, hates school, and gets everything from his Fairy Godparents (Fairly Oddparent), and the rest of the Pokemon clones out there giving anime a bad name, which is precisely where my rant started so many pharagraphs above. (Yu-Gi-Oh, Cardcaptors, Bayblade, Pokemon... all that crap) Mr.Ed (again, just my ?2)

bob_loblaw
I like some anime. I recently found out about Naruto and got hooked on it ever since I saw the first episode on tv. Anime is definitely more than what most people [who doesnt like them] think. They're more emotional, deep, thorough. And I agree with Mr.Ed, those based off card games are no more than cartoons and in no way is it anime. Im not in love or obssesed with animes and there are very few that I would actually watch. Come to think of it, only the DB/Z/GT and Naruto series are the ones I am really interested in. All the others I'll watch it if Im bored.

ichi
Saying you hate anime is like saying you hate movies. Same as with movies, there's anime for childs, anime for teens, anime for adults, anime for girls, there're different genres (comedy, drama, action, sci-fi...) and stories range from the most simplistic idea to complex stuff involving politics, religion and philosophy. Even the drawing and animation styles, while being quite similar in lots of anime, isn't always the same. Just compare Ghost in the Shell and One Piece.
