Intel or AMD...

Recommended Posts

I currently have an AMD Athlon Thunderbird 1.33GHz 266 and I'm going to be aquiring a new processor soon.

I wanted to know what you all thought about the performance differences between the AMD Athlon XP (preferably the Thouroughbred core, being the 2200+) and the Intel Pentium 4 1.8-2.0GHz.

I am looking for personal experience in 3D gaming applications more than anything else, especially with the Quake and Unreal engines.

Before I go...

1. I know I will need a new motherboard for the Intel, and yes I've got one picked out.

2. Fanboys need not post. :)

Thanks!

I would stick with AMD, for a number of reasons:

1) AMD has a better price/performance ratio. P4's cost too much

2) The only real thing that the P4's are able to surpass by a big amount is the memory performance. BUT, with RDRAM you HAVE to use 2 sticks of the same size ram. With DDR, you can use a 128 and 256 chip, etc. One drawback of DDR tho is that if you want to use more then 2 sticks of ram, you need to buy registered ram. But you cna just buy a 512 chip and that should last you quite a while.

3) AMD isn't constantly changing their socket sizes like Intel does.

Before anyone says anything, so I am not a fanboy. When I built my current system, I did alot of research and found the AMD setup to be alot cheaper and more worh the money.:D

Basically it's up to your choice.

But personally I might go with Intel since it's trustable and reliable.

Expensive though :ponder: .

I agree with jago6498. I mean i have an Athlon XP 2000+ (Palomino) and when i do a sandra benchmark it surpasses a P4 2.4 GHZ. So i would say AMD is the better choice as it will cost u less money because u already have a motherboard for it ;)

I don't get why people say that AMD's chip are not as reliable. I have had my system for over a year and have never had one problem with it. The same goes with friends who have been using AMD since the Slot days. And yes the Athlon during that time was a little buggy but those problems have long been fixed. Oh and n@th@n_151, "Trustable" isn't a word.:D

AMD's might run warmer, but you can still get HSF's that are silent. The same goes for the case fans, just find a basic fan with good CFM and low dB. I've built a few systems based on AMD Athlon's and Duron's that are dead silent.
