Is Vista (5219) good enough to use regulary?

Recommended Posts

I have Vista build 5219 on DVD and Windows XP SP2 installed at the moment. My computer could do with a reformat. Should I install Vista? Will all software/games work? Are the ATI drivers good enough for gaming? Is it hard to find drivers like x64?

No, it really is NOT made for regular use. Only testing. Your bound to get alot of problems with it.

edit: Wait for Beta 2 if you want to test Vista. As of now it's not really anything special.

Simple answer, hell no.

Firstly, if your not an official tester, you got a whole 14 days to use Vista before it locks you out of it.

Secondly, Vista, especially the PDC build, is only intended for light testing at the moment, light being strictly OS run down testing, If you feel completely compelled to default it as your only OS, wait untill RC0 or RC1 atleast in 2006.

One split second beat me to it. :p

No mate dont run Vista as your main OS now, its just for people to test out, to find bugs and that. So stay with XP for now.

Let me tell you my experiences with Vista 5219, I had XP before and I decided to tested out this Vista, oh well, was a pain in the ass, very, very buggy, slow, I'm really dessapoint it, I will never test again until maybe RC1 is release.

It's a beta...it's Windows...need I say more....

Not as simple as that. It is a beta of a version of Windows that was built on a solid foundation.

This solid foundation that you speak of is called windows 2000 professional. Vista is just Windows 2000 Professional as its base. If you beg to argue that do a start -> run...then type cmd...then type systeminfo...you will see microsoft forgot to change a line of code where it says Operating System and you will find that build 5219 has in the operating system line Windows 2000 Professional. Funny how future revolutionary operating systems have to take a step back instead of making advancements. Who wants to buy Windows 2000 Professional again worth a few hundred dollars? Nice move microsoft. Whatever happened to making something new and original and revolutionary?

cswimbound, the core is actually the server side of windows 2003. If you think it is just windows 2000, you are dead wrong.

if you are a beta tester, you can use it as main OS. However, not all applications will run on it. AIM for one does not run on it. Don't try to install AntiVirus unless you know it is compatible. Symantec Antivirus Corproate 10 will cause BSOD in Vista.

There are a lot of things in Vista that don't quite work the way you expect, so be warned. Other than that, it can be used as a daily machine.

One line of code does not Windows 2000 make, especially a line that simply identifies something. There's tons of old stuff like that in Windows, has been for years. Vista is based off a very heavily modified Server 2003 code base if I'm not mistaken.

Exactly, some people just don't do research before posting.

I'm using it right now - and i can tell you from experience its not ready for use as a primary OS - Driver Support is limited and you need a top of the line Video Card to get better then half decent video preformance out of it.

Mind you...if you turn all the glass and **** off, It preforms quite well. (WinKey + Pause -> Advanced -> Performance -> Settings -> Select 'Adjust for Best Performance' -> Apply) The sidebar is still transparent and the rest of the dialogs look like a revamped Windows 2000, but in a good way.

beta 1 is buggy, beta 2 should be less buggy,as for being your main os i would wait, vista prefers a pci express video card but it will work with agp cards.if you got anything less than an fx card vista won't run very good.
