Vista OS name

Recommended Posts

Does anyone find it odd that when you go to cmd and type systeminfo the OS name shows up as Windows 2000 Professional ?

I just thought I'd point that out. I find it odd because Vista is supposed to be built off of a different (newer) codebase. Since they changed that in XP and Server 2003, I just find it funny that it says 2000.

and YES, I DO know that its BETA so gimmie a break. :D

Hey names don't really bother me, I just want absolutly NO 8bit colour icons ANYWHERE in the system. That also goes for crappy files aswell (a'la clock.avi)

I've got Server 2003. It says:

OS Name: Microsoft® Windows® Server 2003, [edition name here] Edition

Different Editions:

Web Server,

Enterprise,

Small Busniess,

Standard,

Datacenter,

obviously Vista is not build from scratch even when Microsoft said is a totally new, all OS from the NT to Vista are using the NT foundation, the only new they add is new stuff into the OS and the command window are almost the same crap

Correct. If I was to rebuild my house from scratch, I would reuse the bricks where I could, but I might add new windows. ;)

I care because they are ugly and useless and most of these garbage files (for example clock.avi) are taking up space that should be free....

Did I say it would change it? I said that legacy files like these should NOT be in an OS that is supposed to be next generation.

I don't care how small all of these files are, if they all add up to 20MB thats 20MB too much imho. They shouldn't be there full stop..

I agree, I've always hated those icons...

Same Here.... Except that could give graphics artist for XP an idea.....new icons for MS Device Managaer / System manager, etc, etc?

and they SHOULD remove those crappy irrelevant files; such as:

Clock.AVI

Sample Music from the 'My Music Folder':: They seriously do Suck!

Tour Windows XP (or other versions...)

You catch my drift :D

and they should make a version of windows, with Developer Edition....'Microsoft Vista Developer Edition'?

I agree, also if that is/was MS's general mentality what redundant code is left lying around that we can't see?

Well, we might be in luck. The new Vista UI guidelines state that:

All icons used in Windows Vista client (for items such as applications, devices, document types, and control panels) must adhere to the Aero-style icon guidelines. You must replace all Win 9x and Win 3.1 style graphics. Windows XP-style graphics can be used in Windows Vista, but are also recommended to be updated to the new style and quality.

Now, I don't know if this only applies to *new* applications or pre-existing stuff like all the MMC snap-ins.

Interesting, but will they still be left on the system for "compatibility reasons"?

Gawd, I hope not.

Maybe we'll see a Vistaize app like the Xpize app we have now.

Has anybody figured out what clock.avi is for anyway?

Edit: Many of the Xp icons have an 16-256 color version. They probably could use new Vista icons (32 bit) for the MMC with a 16 and 256 color version just in case. Why not?

Well they said that the kernel was new the gui interface too, but not the full OS, if someone can show me a place where a original "not remade" document form M$ telling there restarted everything from scratch, then i will say they said it but not before.

Also just to point out, the command prompt is the one from win2000 but only till the beta command prompt that beta testers are testing is final then they will replace the current one with the final new command prompt

Thats not too bad, but I still would rather have only 32bit icons.
