When they were talking about Vector graphics, they were talking about the rendering engine, WPF (formerly Avalon). Icons are still in bitmap format, however they support larger resolutions now. By default I believe that is 256x256.

Yea I remember it was said that all "Longhorn" icons will be scaleable vector images. But with Vista UI guidelines they mention 256x256 PNGs. And when you see pixel sizes, you know what it is...

So we have 4 sizes:

16x16

32x32

48x48

256x256

Right?

no wrong,

Vista Icons are all PNG images saved in an ICO packadge

the formats come in 8bit, 16bit and 32bit PNG

at res

16x16

24x24

32x32

48x48

128x128

256x256

although not all are required only 16x16, 48x48 and 256x256 are recomended, the new vector scaleing can smooth them pretty good to look right at any res but 16x16... these are not vector images, but use vectors to scale

they never said the "icons" would be vector images, they where talking about vector resizing which is completely different... it's useing Direct3D to find points on an image and use them to resize the image with better quality

Yeah, I don't think MS said this outright - it was just rumor. I believe that with Avalon we have the option to create our own vector icons however, the shell will not make extensive use of them.

I don't know if anybody has noticed but in 5112 and 5219 there seems to be anti-aliasing of the icons going on when they're between sizes. For example, a 200 px icons appears just as smooth as a 256 px icon. In Xp if you scaled things up just one pica everything got grainy as hell.

I thought I read somewhere that the Windows Team is planning on pushing it out to 512 by 512?

Probably, but it's usually easier to scale down than up.
