DIY pc questions

Recommended Posts

Hi all. I am new to this forum, and I find it very informative. I have a few questions on my mind, and would like all of you here to help me.

1) I am thinking of setting up a diy pc mainly for adobe photoshop, premiere, aftereffects, 3d max and maya.( I am very very new to all these programs!!! )

2) So what sort of specs should my diy pc have? Will a dual processor pc work better for the above-mentioned programs, or a highend p4?

3) I plan to get ard 1.5 gb ram, but is not so sure of my harddisk space. How much do you think is neccesary?

4) Will a good video card and monitor make any visible difference( in terms of price vs quality )?

5) please do list out the parts as I am very confused right now.

Thank you all for your time.

you wont need a dual processor but a nice Intel 2.4Ghz will do the job :)

Hard Disk space should be alot coz eventually ull fill it and ull keep installing things so lets see an 160GB or 120GB HDD will do, 80GB if ur on a budget

well monitor dosent really really matter but it does if u want a good resolution or refresh rate so try get a good monitor but if u get a good monitor ull need a good Video Card, I say go for the Geforce 4 Ti4400 its good value for performance :)

[edit] didnt include parts ..

Case

CD Drive (2 if u want, CD-RW, DVD-Rom or DVD-RW)

CPU

Fans (If ur using a powerful PC)

Floppy Drive

Hark Disk

Heatsink for the CPU

RAM

Modem

Motherboard

Network Card (If u want to network)

Power Supply

Sound Card

Video Card

Monitor

Speakers (Ifu want sound :p )

if ur gonna do big things u mite want a 21" moitor ..im on a 19" and i slightly want bigger ..make sure the screen can go to a high resolution with a good refresh rate..

hmmm, im not the best person, but id guess go for a high end p4 (or amd) lots of ram for those apps is a good idea, you might want a decent sized hdd, if your on a budget go for something like a 40gig drive, and yes nice big monitor would help, trust me. not sure what video card to recommend, if its just for work a guess a Geforce card would do the job, or you could go for a matrox parhelia, which are supposedly good for work (not really for games tho).

but if your serious about doing all that graphical work, why don't you just get a Mac? thats what theyre good at ;)

just my 2 pence...

Thank you for all the replies. I would like to focus on adobe premiere, and adobe after effects more. What will be of top concern for this 2 programs to run well?

I will be getting at least 2 x 80 gig harddisk, 1 - 1.5 gb ram.

A dvd rom and a cdr drive.

Preferbably onboard sound and raid.

Os will be win 2k. ( or is win XP better)

A modem, network card and speaker isn't nessary for me.

Still considering about dual processors, or a highend p4.

Video card and monitor still have no clues yet....

I would like to get a mac, but it is really expensive. So I am going for a DIY.

I would like to get a dual proc, but is not sure about the advantages over a uni-proc when using after effects and premiere. (3d max as well)

;)

thank you all for your help

go with 2k..XP is a big RAM sucker for its looks

dont go with macs..trust me about that if ur doing this kinda stuff

dual procesors are rare and it will cost u alot..its only recommened that u get dual processers if ur gonna do alot of rendering ect. otherwise stay with a high end P4

also instead of on board sound..id rather get a cheapie sound card like an SB Live! Value

yes..those programs definatly will...rendering is like creating the image and if u make animations u need fast rendering so u can see the animation perfectly
