Will Apple follow UX Guidelines?

Recommended Posts

With early images of WMP 11 looking like the rest of the shell in vista it seems aparenent that even Microsoft might follow there own guidelines to make all their software UI consistent with the look and feel of Vista.

But will Apple do the same. As i use iTunes almost religously i would like to see it consistent instead of the Brushed look it has had for so long for Windows Users.

I think with Vista Apple should look into changing how they create software for Windows users and they should take advantage of the Search and WPF technology in Vista.

Who Agrees?

I think Apple should update the UI, but I doubt they will.

I think the brushed metal look of quicktime and itunes looks rubbish, but I don't really care since itunes is crap and I don't use it.

To be fair its Apples corporate look - i'd be surprised if they'd change it for Microsoft. If the boot was on the other foot, I couldn't see the same happening.

i think they should keep the brushed metal look , so that vista users can get a lil glimpse of what an excellent ui looks like  :D

Yeah, because it's sooooo "excellent" having brushed metal glopped all over half the OS, then a miss-matched hodge-podge of other UI styles everywhere else. Just beautiful.

Apple will probably replace brushed metal with the new iTunes 5 look. I don't care what they do with the Windows version.

On Windows almost every application or application suite uses it's own look and window layout, some even have a completely different visual style. GUI Consistency is almost non-existant on Windows, especially when it comes to 3rd party applications. So it doesn't really matter that iTunes looks different.

And why should Apple do that on Windows if Microsoft doesn't do it on Mac OS X? ;)

Windows Media Player 9 for Mac still uses Jaguar styled buttons when they should be sunken.

I think it's ridiculous to expect anything that comes out too look like vista. While it would would nice, you can't expect competing companies to make everything look the way microsoft wants it to be. how much fun would it really be if everything looked the same?

Well it is the case on Mac OS X. 99,9% of all applications use the default Mac OS X styles (about 6 different variations possible). It makes the OS look very streamlined, where on Windows it looks like a mess from time to time.

What do you mean?

At least Microsoft isn't forcing a Windows look on Mac OSX!

They don't follow the Apple guidelines at all.

No but look at these screenshots, they look somewhat like Apple's styles.

Microsoft applications on Mac OS X are one of the few applications that really stand out. There are many things about those applications that don't match Aqua. Entourage 2004 (Outlook for Mac) is a freak-show compared to others.

I don't need to take a look at those screenshots since I've got the real thing running right here.

They're a lot closer than Apple is with their crappy software on Windows.

That's what I meant.

What would you say if Microsoft released their software on Mac with this look? Apple does that with the opposide look.

I'm sure Apple is crying you a river right now.

"their crappy software"

Nice way to show your position in an otherwise decent post.

edit: And I don't see Apple changing the iTunes UI to follow Microsoft's UI guide anytime soon. The idea is that people will buy an iPod and use Windows... over time, the Apple name gains ground, and the person decides to go try out a computer. When they open iTunes on OS X, they want it to be similar to iTunes on Windows, for familiarity.

Like I pointed out before: Almost every application on Windows has a different look and feel. Applications like Microsoft Office 2003, MSN Messenger, MSN (Explorer), Roxio Easy Media Creator 7 (the list goes on and on) all have a different appearance nowhere to be found in Windows XP itself. Some more extreme than others.

The exact opposite is the case on Mac OS X where practically all Applications use the Aqua interface, which exists out of 6 different styles.

And we're talking about following GUI guidelines, Microsoft doesn't do that on Mac OS X either.

I'm sorry, I wasn't aware that I wasn't allowed to state my opinion on the quality of Apple's software.

Go nuts with the "opinion on the quality of Apple's software" thing. The fact that said opinion has nothing to do with the topic only decreases your reputation and shows you as an Apple basher. Congrats (Y)

How exactly does saying things like "Everything about Apple is crap" and "Windows is the most pathetic OS out there" contribute to a discussion? I mean that's about the level you're currently at.

The examples you cite are BS. Applications on the Mac are the exact same way. Every application is going to have it's own "look," that's just how things work. At least on Windows, the vast majority of applications use the standard window controls. Apple's software on Windows doesn't even try.

Oh please. Calling Apple's software crappy isn't even close to that.

They don't? iPod updaters seem to use the Windows UI as expected. As do Apple's installers.

As such, WMP on OS X doesn't even try to fit in with any of Apple's window styles.

Check your arguments, then come back.

I am an Apple basher, I won't try and hide that fact. This is a Windows forum. If you want to be all touchy feely with people who worship the Mac, go over to the Mac forum.

Why don't you come up with some applications that people might use for more than five minutes per month?? Those are "support programs" at best, I wouldn't even call them applications.

:rolleyes::

Struggling for a foothold in an argument you've already lost, I see.

Enjoy. Bye.
