Sean B. Veteran Posted September 30, 2005 Veteran Share Posted September 30, 2005 Well, I was listening to the radio a few hours ago, and I heard our superintendent of schools say that he is most likey going to reduce our school week by one day. The reason he is wanting to do this, is soposidly it will conserve energy? I got to thinking, how will that work? Any of you oil fanatics out there explain this to me. Because, if we go to school 4 days a week, monday-thursday, and are off friday-sunday, that just means that people will just ride around fridays if there not in school? So therefore, it would mean using MORE energy would it not?

raid517
I think he just wants to cut his own energy bills, due to the high price of energy/oil ATM. It's kind of similar with what is going on with the Bush government just recently. Everyone is feeling the pinch due to the high cost of oil, so the government (and state officials) look like they might be about to start an energy efficiency drive soon in order to try to cut costs for the state/country and for industry as a whole. If you can't buy the oil at a reasonable price, the only alternative is to use less of it - and make what you have go further. GJ
blackhorse
If there is no school then no transporting of students in buses and other vehicles thus saving fuel. One estimate suggests 175,000 barrels can be saved by doing so. I however feel its a dumb idea...kids will start roaming around if they dont have to go to school. It put a lot of parents in some hard spots trying to secure day care for their kids since he only gave about 2 days notice. I have yet to see the follow up about how effective it was. Sean B. Veteran Posted September 30, 2005 Author Veteran Share Posted September 30, 2005 Yeah, but if you cut one more day out of school, the buses and teachers will not drive. Then again, while we are in school our cars are parked. If we are out driving around, 90% of the people would be, then wouldn't it just be useing up as much if not more oil? Armeck you go to highschool still ?

Sean B. Veteran Posted October 2, 2005 Author Veteran Share Posted October 2, 2005 Because it has to do with conserving energy, which is about science is it not?
+M2Ys4U Subscriber¹ Posted October 2, 2005 Subscriber¹ Share Posted October 2, 2005 I doubt it would, it'd just pass the buck of energy usage, so to speak.
HimalayaJoe
This seems to be a real problem in the US at the minute. I've not really took much notice with living in England, but it looks to be turning out a lot worse for you guys than expected.

redFX
Seeing as how I had to do 5 days a week when I was in school, the dark side of me hates this because I want kids to suffer like we did. 5 days a week. But if their going 4 days, doesn't that mean they had to eat up those days by longer school year? And maybe no 2 week breaks here and there? Will this hinder education as well? Or maybe not? But I know if I had an extra day from school, I'd be working an extra day, making money, and then hanging out at night with my buddies driving around. So is that really helping with the gas issue? Kids will still go hang out with their buddies and those that can drive will be out on the streets 1 more day.
