AVG Users

Question

if you use AVG, would you mind sharing your experience? what OS, for how long, does it do a good job, any stability issues or anything of importance?

I'm using it with all options (constant monitor) and have no complaints.

AVG works very well, I installed it on a virus ridden win98 system and it removed everything where McAfee and Norton had failed. Then I installed it on my computer (XP), it worked well, except for the Resident Sheild. I downloaded a new version a few months ago and everything works well now.

The best thing about AVG is that it is up-to-date, doesn't hog resources and it's free.

New - AVG Free edition is now available for all single home and office end users Worldwide! Closer information you can find in end user license agreements.
Hey, this wasn't the case some months ago when I tried to download it (the worldwide thingy)

Ah well got the other free one installed now

... not being a bunch of mcaffee and norton fanboys

No offence meant, but what's wrong with sticking with a product that you like and know how to use pretty well? I like Norton, therefore I use Norton. It may not be the best solution for you, nor is it the optimal one for me, but I like it, and I'll use it...

Of course, the fact that NAV 2002 had one year of paid updates.. was kinda lame.. but the Corporate Edition is by far much better.. Unlimited updates.

Corp edition is a bit too expensive to use at home :p but I do agree norton corp edition is a good product.

i only say that because 95% of the people that use NAV/McAffee only use it because everyone else does, and they don't really have any good reasons why. just because something is popular and heavily marketed does not mean it is good. and catching most viruses (virii?) does not mean a product is good. having too many false positives is a bad thing. i've heard that serious virus makers consider nav/mcaffee to be jokes, but that's just something i've heard from a few people, so take it with a grain of salt.

twist: can you point me to some of the tests you are referring to? on their webpage they say they pass the tests with 100% success, but i'm gonna guess that is a little biased ;)

False positives? .. I'm not sure..

I've been running NAV CE 7.6 on my servers for at least a year running. Never had any false positives, and only one problem ever with it ( conflicts with other apps )...

I can only speak out of personal experience here but I use norton corp 7.6 at work as well (servers and workstations) and never had any problems.

I tried nav2002 at home and I don't like it. It slows down my system and I'm unable to stop the services quickly.

I now use the free avast32 and so far I like it. Don't know if it's any good since it hasn't detected a virus yet :p (only running it for 3 days)

Another thing is virus writers some times attack NAV and Mcafee when executing their payloads. NAV is a good product, but I dont feel like it is worth paying for.

I've used AVG with XP since XP came out.

I would suggest setting it to update more often, I think the default is something like every 30 days or something (which may be why it sometimes doesn't do as well in comparison tests. When it's updated every few days it does quite well)

I like that it integrates so well into my email program (I use Eudora so not all AV do) and that it takes so little resources to run.

The only flaw I've found is that if you install it, the "Play All" inside your My Music folder stops working. You can still play music... just not using that. No idea why it does this, but there it is :s
