Getting rid of Vista

Recommended Posts

Well, I actually copies of Vista on my secondary HDD now with the other residing in Windows.old. Problem is (unless I missed an uninstall somewhere) is how to get rid of and delete Vista from that drive.

Trying to delete it manually (The Windows folder) either through Explorer or CL does not work as I assume Windows is protecting files it deems as important. This is especially critcal as now I can't seem to run scandisk on the drive as so many sectors are read only or return a CRC error and this is b0rking up normal boot.

Solutions much appreciated.

I would still like to know how to handle this in the future though (if I ever do this again that is) surely many of you have installed Vista on other disks or partitions?

Have you tried booting XP into safe mode , getting back your old xp bootloader , see if it works back ,turn off computer, reboot xp safe mode and go to the disk management area , right click on the disk or partition you want to format and execute ?

Regards,

N.A.R.

The thing is to get back to normal xp bootloader and see if it still works ( for boot ) . Normally , it does not let you boot the Vista drive anymore . If you still have a vista line , try to delete it and reboot . Then from xp you should be able to reformat the vista drive ?

Anyone hints ? This is only a suggestion

Dont know if this helps but I only have one drive and I made a second partition which I installed beta 1 onto.

I had C:\ XP Pro

D:\ Vista

Vista installed it's own bootloader and I *think* it places the files for this on the C:\ drive.

When I came to uninstall I deleted the D partition and then merged back the free space. I deleted the files which had been placed on C by Vista - they are pretty obvious to spot.

Before you do this however --- edit your XP C:\boot.ini to set XP as default OS and remove the Vista line.

That worked perfect for me, hope this helps.
