AOL attempts to block Trillian AGAIN

Question

Found this over at Unite The Cows :

"In their continuing war against the spirit of the internet - and all things free, AOL have once again tried to block trillian from their servers.

The last time, AOL implemented a change which could detect if it was an official client by the small discrepencies in the protocol. Now, it seems, Cerulean Studios have perfected the protocol so the false client is undetectable.

However, now AOL have managed to find and exploit a bug in trillian's contact list support. They've changed the way the contact list is sent.. not by much, so the real AIM client still works... but trillian cacks itself and promptly crashes.

It only seems to affect some people - I *think* it only affects people with contacts which have spaces. I.e "Red Lemon" as opposed to "RedLemon". I'm not sure about this.

While we all eagerly await an update for trillian, a simple fix is to deactivate AIM (simply delete the AIM.ini file from your trillian directory).

I'm wondering which vile tactics AOL will use next. I am curious about the legality of this most recent move, as it actually crashes the entire client - and does not just prevent the client from using AIM. "

Edit: (From trillian forums) If it makes you feel any better, Scott just said : "We're working on it".

Just thought I'd post this so everyone who uses Trillian (hopefully a lot of you do) will be aware of this.

I just found this while looking through the Trillian Forum, might be a fix for the AOL problem.

"Folks,

Those of you experiencing crashes when starting up trillian - please try:

- Go to your trillian program directory

- Delete or move (don't just rename) your current aim.dll

- Download http://www.ceruleanstudios.com/~smw/aim.dll

- Put new aim.dll in place of old

- Start Trillian

Let us know if this does or doesn't work. Thanks!

- Scott"

Here is the Link where I got that message, in case you want to read what other people have to say about the issue & the possible solution.

PS: Please donate to Trillian if you can. It's worth it to help them help us with the best chat program out there.

When will AOL realize that Trillian is here to stay??? I suggest that AOL stops this before it loses about 10% of its user base again.

btw: Thanks, DeadMessiah, for the heads-up on this issue. Although I am not experiencing this problem, I have applied the update nevertheless.

AOL cares because they think those annoying ads actually get people to buy stuff...

So if people are using Trillian instead of AIM, and not getting the ads, AOL is losing money because people can't be taken in by the wonders of them & be forced to buy-buy-buy.

That and because AOL is run by a man who *looks* like he takes little boys into his house and they are never heard from again.... (Steve Case 'hard' at work).

;)

*=I'm not saying that is what Steve Case does and/or has ever done. I'm just making a comment about how Stever Case's appearance might make people wonder what kind of man he really is.

Just thought I'd post this so that comment wouldn't get deleted.

AOL is just being selfish. Those ADs are more annoying than helpful. And what makes you think that you can't just disable the Ads in the REAL AIM client as well?? (which is quite easy to do).

i'm not saying i hate aol, i just hate the ads in aol...

last time i used it there was three ads on the profile viewing window.

why is aol so much if they have so many ads?

money from users + money from ad posters = rich, rich aol

the users don't win at all.

and as far as my other post...

the only people i know that use aol are:

my mom (she got a year of it for free), my friends mom (shes likes it), my mom's friend's kids,....

so that's why i posted that.

i put old people because it's more user friendly than any other isp so i figured they'd be using that more than some other isp.

so don't think i'm bashing aol to be cool..

i only bash aol because they try to stop trillian (which i love) and they have tons & tons of ads which limits there users enjoyment while online

lets put it this way, say you owned a very popular instant messenging program that was supports by ads, then someone made a product which freeloaded (thats what it does) on your servers. Would you block it?

If trillian is so great, why don't the break away and use their own servers to store buddy lists and online information?.... oh yeah, that would require revenue.

Yeah i am sure you do like trillian because of its features and no ads, but you need to understand econimics first.
