Dunno it feels a bit retarded talking to your computer at the current tech level. It would be cool if you would have speech recognition integrated in your house, so you can command your PC to do things (like playing music etc.) while being on the move.

I don't see a real point in the whole voice recognition when sitting right in front of it.

Is the VR in Vista capable of affecting the system? (ie: you can say "Control Panel" and it goes there)

Yes, that and more... You can play music through it, with NO media player and control the playlist.

Just a run down, I said the following to it and everything worked OUT OF BOX.

Start, Run

Start Pictures

Start Computer.... Shutdown

Play Artist Joe satriani, then just say playlist, and say ur number, track plays in that little window thing.

I'm still working on teachin it everything... but if i only had network drivers

Just imagine when the technology exists when we just have to think what we want and it works on the computer... i can't even put it into words how sweet that would be...

"computer, use itunes, play (insert song here), shuffle on" as i walk through the front door, playing music and lights on and dimmed only in the room i am in (location detection) would be fab.

So when your PC is off and you say "Start Computer" it goes on? That's pretty amazing...

I'm pretty sure he meant he issued these commands:

"Start" (clicks start button)

"Computer Shutdown" (akin to clicking on shutdown)

Naturally, there isn't going to be any speech recognition running with the machine powered off.

You do know that I wasn't really thinking that it would actually power-up huh?

Here's what I don't understand. I can have a cell phone that can understand every command in it's entire menu, and the names of everyone in the entire address book without any training whatsoever (Samsung A620), and a car that I can issue commands to like "Set driver temperature to 68, change radio to 103.5 FM, and find me the closest Chinese restaurant" also without any training whatsoever (any new Acura/Honda Accord with nav system, Lexus has something similar I think), but for computers we have to waste time training the damn things so that they won't listen to anyone but us?

I think it has to do with the complexity of an OS and all the 3rd party applications it has to run. You can't really compare a simple cell phone menu with Windows or Mac OS X.

But it's a bit weird that you have to train al the standard commands tho.

Very Cool.

I noticed that they have replaced the text to speech engines with newer versions.

The new voice Anna sounds much better than the older Sam voice.

The new voice is also available with Streets and Maps 2006.

Now you have audio prompts for turn by turn directions when you use this Streets and maps on a laptop with a GPS in your car.

Btw for all the people that want computer controlled homes, there is the technology to do that. I think its called X-10 (or just search for smart homes) I've also heard that recently there has been a big push to make it more intelligent and to get it into more homes. I think you could easily set up a house with microphones and speakers embeded in the walls and ceilings that will relay back to a computer. After that the possibilites are endless with USB interface cards you can turn other things on/dim lights etc. The technology is there to be able to do all this stuff but I think it costs a bomb at the moment. If we could intergrate it all into Vista, then intergrate Vista into the home... 0_o lol the mind boggles... let an MS system take over your home.... hummm. I would love to try this out but there don't seem to be any drivers for my sound card and the network card dosn't work anyways with Vista...

I think the need to train the computer has more to do with the speech to text components than the voice control ones. Much more difficult for the computer to accurately turn speech into text than to perform simple commands.

Out of the box with no training Vista's recognition is awesome and very accurate. Just turn it on and talk! And I thought that Voice Command for Windows Mobile was awesome...
