Vista Color Schemes

No. Glass is enabled if your computer passes the machine check, defaults to metal if it's a mid-grade computer, and defaults to "to go" if your computer sucks. As is my understanding anyways.

I don't recall seeing "to go". Does anyone have a screenshot?

To Go uses standard XP rendering. Metal uses DWM but isn't as resource intensive as Glass. The two look similar.

Metal and To Go aren't currently showing in the color scheme listbox (as of 5219) so the only way to access them are via registry, but they are listed in the msstyle, so I would expect them to show up there fairly soon.

Is this the one they call Metal UI with the metalic borders?

I thought it was just showing the transparent borders on a black background.

YNOTM could you explain about the registry please? Do you mean

HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Control Panel/Colors

is where "Metal" and "To Go" show up? As I understand it by using ctrl + shift + F9 you can go from "Glass" to "Metal" but I'm guessing there is no shortcut for "To Go" as of yet?

ctrl + shift + f9 actually switches between Glass and To Go. Metal can be activated by (I believe, I haven't tried this in 5219)

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DWM]
"Metal"=dword:00000001
"Glass"=dword:00000000

In Beta 1, Metal could also be enabled on laptops by clicking the battery icon in the system tray and selecting "Power Saver" as the power scheme. The only differences between Metal and To Go is that Metal uses the Glass caption buttons and the screen is still composited by DWM. Metal = Aero Express, BTW.

No, thats Aero Glass. Metal looks a lot like To Go, which is what you get when you run the Aero MSSTYLE with DWM turned off.

hmmm can anyone post comparative screens of the 3 of them?

I would, but apparently you can't activate Aero Metal in 5219 (the registry entry I provided earlier DOES NOT work).

YNOTM thank you for the explanation. I am interested the UI of Vista. Not just Glass but also Metal and To Go but haven't found much info on the Metal and To Go UI as of yet.
