The last Intel vs. AMD thread you'll ever have to read... for now...

Recommended Posts

I have grown tired of the countless Intel vs. AMD threads in these forums, and I have come to try and put an end to them... for now. :) We all know that as soon as any new architecture is released you'll all be at eachother's throats again, so here we go.

For new buyers:

-If you are a gamer, buy AMD.

-If you need to run many CPU intensive applications at once, buy Intel.

-If you are a gamer who needs to run many CPU intensive applications at once, buy Intel.

This is based solely on the architectures of the chips, benchmarks are nothing to look at if you want substantial information. You could run 200 benchmarks, find just one, even the only one, where chip A outperforms chip B, and claim that it is the better processor. Keep in mind that before you read a benchmark you should look closely at the test bed's specs. If a review site is leaning towards, say, Intel, then they may, and have, tested the Pentium chip with the best motherboard known for it, while placing the Athlon chip in the slowest AMD motherboard known to man. This sort of test fudging has happened, and will happen again. Personally, I pay little attention to benchmarks, unless I can be sure that the two testbeds are identical in performance, with the only variable being the processor itself.

Now, to use my recommendations above for an example. I currently have an AMD Athlon Thunderbird 1.33GHz processor. I'm not exactly happy with it, as performance has been lackluster to say the least, but I am now dropping it in favor of a newer chip. I am a gamer. I could easily get a great motherboard and Pentium 4 Northwood 2.53GHz processor to go with it, but because the majority of my CPU's work load is strictly pushing triangles I need good floating point performance, and that is one of the few areas where AMD bests Intel. Yes, the Athlon XP can perform 13.5% more instructions per cycle, but that's all floating point operations, so it all goes into gaming. If I was not a gamer, there would be no second thoughts, I'd be buying Intel. Being as that's mainly all I do, I'll be getting the AMD Athlon XP 2200+ processor.

I hope this has shed some light on the topic and perhaps cleared up some misunderstandings in the other threads.

Thanks for taking the time to go through all of this, I know it's not the shortest processor post ever!

lol i predict this will either be closed or merged with the other thread

although that was a good post nonetheless.

That may be, freeza, but I hope it will be made sticky as it provides some great information that I spent quite a while researching. There are no opinions in here, only facts, and that is what makes it worthy of stickiness. :)

First off merge this thread please

What, gamer buy AMD... Well the newer P4s are best for gaming, and the newer R25 and R30 are said perfrom a lot better on P4s.

-If you need to run many CPU intensive applications at once, buy Intel.
why? dont get that one at all
-If you are a gamer who needs to run many CPU intensive applications at once, buy Intel. [/b]

again, whats the reasoning behind that?

Conduct some research, username. You'll find all you need to know.

Warning: It may take a long time to sort through all of the opinions you'll find on the net and get to the facts, but you'll make it out alive. :)

I did, I am asking you, you are wrong on the gameing one, and I I asked about the multitasking but got no reply

ummm last time i checked AMD was faster when it came to business apps. AMD CPU's do more in a clock cycle than Intel's do so wouldn't it make sense to say that AMD is better for cpu intensive applications?

Good points you have... AMD and Intel both have their own pros and cons. Now... let's stop the arguing and keep posting your opinions, requests for support, and the whatnot...

*this is opinion*

to me, with a P4 and an Athlon, i think the Athlon feels better for games, and office proggies are hardly "CPU-intensive* so amd does it all for me. I found the P4 to be a nice chip, obviously fast, and to be honest, no difference when playing games at all, or in Office, only difference i noticed was th weight of my wallet afet buying it :p

sorry chris. im back.. looks like that crack couldn't kill me :p

that was an excellent post kojinsei but aren't you missing some stuff. I mean what if you are on a tight budget AND you need a fast cpu. Is not the AMD a better choise then intel on there? There are WAY too many variables when deciding what cpu to get. If i run a ftp server and play games and burn cds at the same time shouldnt i go for a dual cpu configuration then a single one? Like i said there are way to many variables involved. If i want to put in my biased opionon in there i say go all AMD and ferget about it. Just make sure you don't skimp on your parts.

If you want a proccessor that wastes the least power (only 5.7W), and produces the least amount of heat, get the new 1Ghz Cyrix, and its so cheap :D
