Vista 5231

Recommended Posts

As far as I know, beta testers haven't had access to 5231. Correct?

I for one hasn't seen it in the Download section. The number of available download remains 29, and ...still waiting.

Some of the software is not stable, like when you look at the network, it crashes that after. and the Media Center goes mad to. If your not runing them, the system run much better then last builds.

You cant run it as a main OS though, its far from being at that stage. Saying that im runing it as my main OS. Only put it on this morning. Im missing XP though lol.

I would say stay with XP for a bit.

I have a "friend" :p who wants to know what the command for editing folder options is now? In 5219, it used to be "control folder" command in the START > RUN menu, but doesn't work in 5231. :(

how did you install the audio drivers?

Windows put them on as it was installing. I just an on-board sound card. So there was no problem with that.

I can't help but worry that Vista is shaping up to be XP with a serious facelift but nothing much more......

So what there's system wide search?..... You can have that in XP with plenty of different software....

So what there's Glass...? You can now do most of that with Windows Blinds..... And Microhoff could have updated XP with a service pack to add that....

All of the new stuff in Vista is quite easily a new XP service pack, like XP second edition or something......

It doesn't warrant a "new" OS title any more than Windows ME did over Windows 98. The changes i've seen and read about (mostly all of the currently knows new features) are entirely superficial and while useful, don't really do much of the "giant leaps forward" that we're hearing so much about.

Without their marketing department, Microhoff would have a seriosuly difficult time shifting many copies of Vista. As it stands, Glass is enough to get most people excited (mice elf included) to the point of a fevered interest and vague obsession.

Microsoft has always said that the new & exciting features will be on Beta 2. So wait for it. :)

System wide search: Possible now, but not with the integration that it will be with Windows and the shell

Glass: No you can't do the same with WindowBlinds. Avalon+Aero is fully 3d accelerator with pixel shaders doing special effects, not just translucency.

There are tons of new things in Vista. Just because you are ignorant of all the changes, does not mean there are no major changes. This is NOT XP with "a facelift" by any stretch of the imagination.

Like VCV said, you won't have the kid of integration Vista has in XP. Don't forget that the desktop search is easily extensible for developers as well. Also the Virtual Folders are not possible on XP.

Windowblinds can do some fancy stuff but it doesn't and will never have the Desktop Compositing features of Windows Vista. Hardware acceleration of the desktop is not something to be underestimated. Things like the 3D view of running applications, the new alt-tab and the flip 3d view are things that are impossible or next to impossible to do at a decent speed in XP.

Things like the Desktop Compositing is directly connected to the new display driver architecture of Vista which are so extensive that they can not be backported to XP with a simple service pack.

The new audio stack is a huge reason for me to upgrade to Vista as well. If you are an audio enthusiast, Vista will be a godsend compared to it's predecessors.

Let's not forget UAP, the new networking stack as well as the myriad of updated applications Vista will have built in.

Just XP with a facelift?!? Educate yourself on Vista and then come back trying to spew the same nonsense.

While I agree with you, Vista is far from a "service pack." If anything, Vista is a bigger upgrade, architecturally and in terms of features, than we're used to.

But I just had to point out that Windows Desktop Search is just as easily extensible for developers on XP as it is on Vista :)

Cool. I haven't looked a lot at XP's Desktop Search from a developer's point. Guess it's all about IFilters then?

...Microhoff ... Microhoff...

586660114[/snapback]

I am going to restate a point that I thought has been beaten to death. Playing tricks with "witty" and creative spellings of Microsoft's name isn't funny, it just makes you look like an ignorant child.

Vista is far from a Service pack. Why is it that people always say this same thing whenever a new version of OS is about to come out. People said the same thing about Tiger for Mac's...granted, that one I believe...it really was just an expensive service pack. :ninja:
