devnulllore
Hi, My WIN XP system has an ASUS P3V4X mobo. It supports ATA66 on board. I have 4 drives: 2 - 15Gig WD Caviar, 7200 ATA66 hd's 1 - Creative PC-DVD 12X dvd-rom drive 1 - Plextor Plexwriter 12/10/32a CDRW I have the 2 HD's on the primary IDE channel and the rom drives on the secondary. The DVD drive is slaved to the writer. Windows XP properties for the drives reports this: PRIMARY IDE CHANNEL: Drive 0 - UDMA MODE 4 Drive 1 - UDMA MODE 4 SECONDARY IDE CHANNEL: Drive 0 - MultiWord DMA 2 Drive 1 - UDMA MODE 2 The question, is this setup for best performance? Any suggestions? tyvm,
freeza
i'd recommend you put them like this primary ide master: hd slave: dvd secondary ide master: hd slave: cdrw
devnulllore
I had thought of that. I thought that if you had 2 devices on the same channel they both only ran at the speed of the lower one. Could it be that since this is using the 80 pin cable it will allow the HD to run at ATA66 and the ROM drive at it's slower speed?
username
just put the two HD on the primary and the two opticals on the secondary, a lot easier to set up with the IDE cables
devnulllore
Yes, in fact the way my case is set up, I have the HD down lower in the front with cooling fans blowing across them. The rom drives are way up top (this is a full server case) and the cables will not work if I slave the rom drives to the hd's Should I be slaving the DVD drive to the writer however? Or the other way around.
