I don't think we need harsher mods - I think many go over-the-top as it is, particularly on the frontpage where even constructive comments are "cleaned" unnecessarily. I detest trolls and personal attacks as much as anyone and those posts should be deleted or edited as necessary but when the moderaton is too aggressive then it starts to impact upon the ability of people to offer constructive criticism. Perhaps more mods as the forum is particular large now, but not "harsher" mods.

Some mods do an absolutely amazing job and come across as really nice people (Dazzla, markjensen, sanctified, shockz) :), other just come across as being too confrontational and restrictive (bangbang023 in particular).

Nope, if you ask me, I think they are a bit too snobbish and self-rightious already.

About 3 Mods are like that -- most all others are very decent.

There is one particular moderator who is well balanced as he has a chip on both shoulders.

The rest I have seen or spoken with are worth their salt.

Maybe you should have a poll for the worst mod.

I would ask one thing though are there any lady moderators?

Don't need stricter mods just more bans, for some people that make useless posts. It's sad to see how the forums have degenerated over time as they got more popular. Maybe theres no way to really fix it without losing a lot of members, which I wouldn't mind but goes against what neowin wants to do I guess. I know some of the mods are upset about it and are going to figure out a way to reduce the problem eventually.

It's sad that people make new threads and have to add disclaimers so as to not get flamed, where in any other forum it wouldn't happen.

they are pretty good most of the time, however i think we need to tighten up our rules on trolling, and flaming about posts.

it seems like every post has a troll/flame in it. i mean, i'm all for dicussion, but should we allow these cocky buutheads to bash our threads? i think not.

If you look at my registration time, you'll notice I'm an e-old fart with an e-beard here, relatively.

I think the mods already got more strict than they were before -- now any kind of questionning of a third party's intelligence, even if subtle, will result in a warning. In fact any kind of insult, loose or not. And well.. uhm.

Whenever I'm in an argument with someone here over anything, geeky or not, I don't feel that I have freedom of speech. And for strange reasons, the other person usually gets away with much more hurtful sayings than me just saying "Do me a favor and never breed again." (Which *is* gratuitous, but you know...)

I just feel there isn't much balance -- it took so long to get rid of that one troll whose-name-shall-not-be-mentionned while it took two posts to get me at 40% warning.

In any case, I don't blame them, it is difficult to balance such things and micro manage each case, unless you're jobless and have no friends nor occupations.

Some of the mods *are* a bit... excentric and overzealous to say the most. But apart from that, it's fine.

(hell) no.

some mods don't respond when messaging them, others are instantly there, friendly and helpful. we need more of #2.

Maybe because we don't have the time to reply? You'd be surprised how many PM's/IM's I get that I simply don't have time for.

other just come across as being too confrontational and restrictive (bangbang023 in particular).

I guess not kissing everyone's ass makes me confrontational. If you ask any member who has taken the time to get to know me, you will see I'm one of the guys who cares more about the members than anything else.

In the end, I volunteer my time to help you people out and never ask for anything in return, not even a thanks. Generally speaking, the people who don't like the staff are the people with warning levels higher than 0%. There are exceptions, but that's the most common of cases. I know I do a good job and I haven't been fired, so I'm not as bad as the few nay sayers would like people to believe.

Wo:wacko:o: (@ brown-nosing).

Anyhow, whether or not the mods need to be stricter isn't the right question to ask... the right question would be "Do the mods need to be more consistent".

There are close to 10 posts I've read in the last 48 hours which should have been edited by mods as they either bashed other users or baited flamers.

The mods aren't always consistent when upholding the rules... it's no wonder why those who have already been warned get upset when they see mods ignoring the infractions of others.

In other words, it's the inaction of the mods that boils my blood...

Bangbang is teh sex!

:p

But naw I think the mods are doing fine, I've seen a few trolls here and there but nothing that they can do about it... they can't be everywhere at once, and sure as hell can't control immature people.

No. Neowin needs users who use the search button for a change instead of starting a new thread for every single thing. Mainly around the Mac Forum.

Most mods do a good job maintaining structure around here.
