Kupo-Cheer
After being here quite a bit for a couple of years, my activities have really tapered off lately. A lot of it has to do with the fact that there are so many members and while the ones who have been here a while seem helpful, most of the newer people are just clueless. I guess it's what happens when sites get really popular and allow everyone in though. Not much can be done about it and the mods aren't really to blame. 586683041 Not to bash any legit new people that have joined recently, and knowing that I am no vet here myself (although I've been with Neowin a lot longer than my account dates back to) but I have to agree... brandon.mat
It would be very ironic and like bangbang023 said," a knowledgable action", to close this topic as a way of expressing their view on this topic.

There is no way you can make thoughtful responses that mean something to other members when you reply that often. That is something that should be moderated a little better. xxdesmus
what really bothers me is when mods will say things that would get anyone else warned. I've seen it happen several times and if you call them on it you get warned yourself or ignored...I just wish the same rules applied to them as well.
Andrew Lyle Global Moderator Posted October 17, 2005 Global Moderator Share Posted October 17, 2005 In the end, I volunteer my time to help you people out and never ask for anything in return, not even a thanks. Generally speaking, the people who don't like the staff are the people with warning levels higher than 0%. There are exceptions, but that's the most common of cases. I know I do a good job and I haven't been fired, so I'm not as bad as the few nay sayers would like people to believe. 586681079 :pinch: you got neowin down to the T.. literally.. neowin.net bangbang023 is harsh.. only when he Needs to be. btw, thanks bangbang

Joey992
My final comment on this topic is this: at its worst, Neowin is still better than other forums of its type. The other ones either have zero activity or a higher concentration of idiots and less moderation. So, complain all you want people but I bet I will see you all here for years to come. protoss_chaos
I think that some of the mods are overly harsh as is... we don't need to make the problem worse! Nothing like getting priviledges removed for things that aren't in the rules...
bangbang023 Veteran Posted October 17, 2005 Veteran Share Posted October 17, 2005 ...they don't seem to be working all that often then I guess...  586683128 Because they read every single post every singe staffer makes? JodyWatts
Some mods do an absolutely amazing job and come across as really nice people (Dazzla, markjensen, sanctified, shockz) :), other just come across as being too confrontational and restrictive (bangbang023 in particular). 586679436 I for one think the all MODs do a great job! I think part of the "problem" is not with the MODs, but with (some of) the members of Neowin. I have been around for 4 years and the board has changed ... A LOT. On a side note: I have NEVER directly "spoken" to bangbang023, but I for one like him. I think he is direct but friendly and think he does a great job! I also like [NFC]Wave his posts are usually quite funny.
Orange Battery
Sometimes mods are idiots, sometimes I am - seems pretty fair to me. What annoys me is when a mod does make a stupid decision or start thinking they are somehow better or a more worthy poster than others just because they clean the place up, but then a lot of janitors think that too  Nah what actually annoys me is the members who worship a mod just for the chance of becoming one, that kind of makes neowin board use a bit pointless if thats all you are here for and a lot of times its what causes all the trouble. Basically if you think a mods an idiot don't tell them, and hopefully they wont tell you either lol

I try really hard to fight the stigma that my posts are more valueable than another members yet some members still have a hard time seeing past the badge. People talking to me to be a mod? Happens a lot, but I let them know that while I don't mind talking to them, I'm not going to be recommending anyone to staff based on anything but their forum posts. Every single staffer I have ever recommended, I have never talked to prior to them joining the team. The content always speaks louder than ass kissing. It's ok to tell a mod they're wrong, just do it in a nice way. Just as we should be firm yet respectful when guiding members who made a mistake. I've reported trolling numerous times and the offending comments have been taken care of only a few times. I've even PMed Supermods and Admins about trolling and they either delete or ignore my PMs because I never get a response and the comments are never taken care of. This sort of goes back to my original complaint.

GaMeDtX
No, I personally think neowin is too tight... I mean you cant even swear! I think you should cut back on some rules... Atleast in the general foums..
xxdesmus
^^ There should be an adult mode or something. Like google images has for example. Heck, we don't have swearing now and there was still a thread that turned into a flame war today. The thread? "How to clean an LCD?" Go figure. It's best to leave words of aggression, such as curse words, separate from this place. We have too many people who would use them much too liberally. fr8t
I think the mods in general do a fine job, but i have posted A topic/link in the past to raise a point about winbeta's racist/biased string of articles, low and behold, comeback to find the thread deleted w/o reason given. I do find that suck-up/buddy-buddy type of censorship to be total BS IMO... And don't tell me neowin and winbeta have no affiliation/favoritism toward one another either. The founder of neowin got his start advertising in the winbeta's IRC channel back in the day. :shifty: Other than that, there are worst forums to hang out at like guru3d.com who's mods are total ******s, to put in their words... :p Edited October 17, 2005 by fr8t

Chad
As an average-joe user, I see posts that have been edited by mods all the time (Y). And that's great (Y)What is discouraging is reading the same amount of 'inappropriate'-posts without any moderator's interjections at all. If it's inappropriate to call someone an 'ignorant butt-wipe', surely any inaction to 'clean' the original comment would be inappropriate too, am I wrong? And as I understand it, when a mod edits a post (cleaning or commenting), a small tag at the bottom of the post appears timestamping the edit and revealing who made the edit. If the inappropriate comments are simply deleted (and thus don't exist after a mod's interaction), surely I wouldn't be coming across so many posts of this nature. :ermm: Thanks for replying to my thoughts, markjensen (Y) In all fairness I wasn't referring to you or the way you maintain the Linux (and other) forums... 586681550 Just because you don't see any moderation doesn't mean it isn't happening. When we edit a post, putting the 'edited' tag on there is an option of the board. I know I've warned people but left the post. A lot of the time it's because the entire thread was closed. Sometimes I forget. what really bothers me is when mods will say things that would get anyone else warned. I've seen it happen several times and if you call them on it you get warned yourself or ignored...I just wish the same rules applied to them as well. 586683079 We are still human beings, but I seriously doubt it's as rampant as you describe. In fact, I'd say it's not as you describe at all. For some reason, some people just don't know how to take responsibility for their own actions. All of us see each other's disciplinary actions, so saying some have a superiority complex and some don't just isn't true. We basically have to 'sign-off', so to speak, on the warning. If another staffer warns a member and I don't agree with the action, I would say something. I know every other mod does the same. That doesn't mean it will be overturned, but I'll speak my mind nonetheless I see a lot of people think we need more mods. Yeah there are 50+ staffers here, but not all are as active as others. People come on when they have time. No excuses here, just laying it out for you guys. You could have 100 mods and not all will be active all the time. I guarantee we still wouldn't catch all of the rule breakings. That is why we need members reporting for us. Mark made a good point. There are some days where I'll be more strict because of something that happened at work or here at home. Other days I let people of the hook. Consistent moderating across the board is impossible. There isn't a forum on the internet that can say that. There are too many things that govern our lives outside of the board. And having 50 strict mods or 50 laid back mods would be unhealthy for any site. Our individual uniqueness is what makes us a strong team, and it's that uniqueness that prevents 100% consistency.
