Don't know if this helps but here's what I had to do.

Right-clicked on taskbar and unchecked Lock the Taskbar.

that didn't help with SP1 v1073 in Windows XP Home (as you know) so I then removed SP1 and rebooted my computer and when it booted back up and displayed For Testing Purposes Only: Build 2600 and I had to reinstall Windows Media Player 9 because it defaulted back to Windows Media Player 8 and crashed the minute I opened the player up. So after I reinstalled WMP9 it launched great without crashing and magically I clicked on the Minimize butten ( I only have three buttens named from left to right...Minimize, Maximize and Close) and I clicked the Minimize butten and I now have a taskbar player. I do know now that having the Lock the Taskbar checked doesn't stop it from going to the taskbar. Hope this helps and if not (based on that you don't have a SP installed) I'll try to find out why you can't use that feature. By the way if you can post screenshots of all the properties and option that you have and I'll compare them with mine and see if something pops out at me that says what it is. I recommend everybody do the same (compare your settings with a person that has it working fine). Just my 2 cents.

It seems pretty clear to me from all the posts that WMP9 doesn't minimize to taskbar player on 1073 systems. For other SP1 builds, I don't know. One person said it was running on their 1050 machine.

I tryed playing MSN radio and it still buffers and I also tryed MSMBC and that buffered too. Also I'm unable to find within the settings of WMP9 where it lists what codecs are being used and are installed.

And what file might that be? What system directory? Be a little more specific.

Thanks for your help.

Bad news regarding the taskbar.... I've tried on 2 different machine, xp pro at home and xp pro at office.... both of them with sp1 1073.... the minimize functions don't work on both... i guess is something with the sp... let's hope in a new beta of wmp9...
