tehas2230
I don't post often, but I think I have a fix for installing Vista 5231 on VMWare 5. 1) Create a new VM (I used Windows XP Pro, but I'm sure any of the recent windows will work) 2) Make sure your disk is setup to be an IDE disk, not a SCSI (Vista has an issue with SCSI, and wouldn't install for me) 3) The disk should be 10GB in size (Vista requires something weird like 8.3GB) I didn't allocate all at once, either, so don't worry about that. 4) Point your cdrom to your Vista image (or DVD if you burned it) 5) Add another IDE disk (10GB as well) 6) Boot from the Vista DVD and select "Install Now" when the installation window appears. 7) Enter the CD key... 8) When it asks for a disk to install Vista to, you need to click "Advanced" in the bottom right corner of the drive windows. 9) For each of the 10GB disks, create a new partition and format them both. You will need to reboot your VM after this. 10) Boot from the Vista DVD again, and choose "Install Now" and continue with the installation. Note: I gave my VM 512 MB of RAM, and it seems to be running ok. You could give more or less, depending on your "style" Note2: If you are installing Vista from a DVD image, it's a good idea to put your VM disks on a seperate physical drive (if you are able to). This will make installation go a little quicker. (One physical disk will be reading the image all the time, while the other physical disk will be writing the info to the virtual disk) Tehas
TheWahbinator
Why me.... Fire up a command prompt (Shift+F10) when you start the installer, and open diskpart. Repeat after me: SELECT DISK 0 CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY SELECT PARTITION 1 FORMAT PARTITION Reboot, start install over again.

Unfortunately, I kept getting the dreaded "Setup couldn't find a suitable hard drive for the temp files" (paraphrased) error. I thought I'd try the same trick that worked with the 5219 install, and it worked (kinda). 25% of the way through my install it crashed, saying something about "error while editing boot entries". I gues I'll regroup and try again.
TheWahbinator
If there are errors when you try doing what I mentioned, then skip the line that says to format the partition.
