jakedman790
I had an idea and I was wondering if any smart people out there could help me out: Recently, for fun I installed the OS X86 flat.img to one of my hdds. For a week or two it ran in black and white until (by myself) I had the idea, if i could update my BIOS to one that would allow more VRAM it would run in color. Which it did, quite speedily, I might add. The only thing was the only BIOS upate I could get my hands on didn't allow me to control the VRAM it just allowed more through ( no VRAM setting ). Now, my question... in theory, couldn't I update my BIOS with one that would allow me to control my VRAM to get the glass effects in 5231? ( Vista runs, just no pretty effects  ) I mean isnt the min requirement 64mb? I have that... its just my BIOS, and in turn Vista doesnt recognize it untill I install the drivers and by that time, windows has been installed and it assumes I dont have enough power video-wise. just a thought  -jake

y_notm
You need a DX 9.0c compatible graphics chip to use DWM (Aero Glass) 586698801 More than that, you need a DX9 compatible card with a corresponding LDDM driver. Upping the VRAM on your system isn't going to do that.
jakedman790
oh well it was an idea... I guess I'll just wait untill I get my new card [GeForce FX OC 5200 256MB] in two weeks. Stupid Car payment is holding me back from getting it this week. :pinch:

Stupid Car payment is holding me back from getting it this week. :pinch: 586699905 If yo are going to upgrade your card, get a better one than that ... the gforce fx 5200 is a starter card, and most AGP is down in price ... if i was you i would go with the Gforce 6600[256mb] (not the GT. The 6600 can achive what the GT can but with 128 more mb of memory, also this requires a bios flash for getting speeds over stock, if u dont flash the 6600[256] bios, it will not overclock at all, or not very much.) If u need a link for the bios post and i will link it) ... I just bought one upgrading from that card (fx5200), although it was a good card in it's time, for overclocking, etc. But if u are planning on Running Windows Vista Ultimate edition, in the future, then i would go with the 6600 or higher. Vista is very demanding on the graphics card. But then again if u are planning on using one of the lower end Vista releases then you should be ok. The 6600[256mb] Goes for around $200.00 cnd Good luck on you Journy. ;) Edited October 20, 2005 by Os1r1s

I just wanted to see it in action on a x86 processor... One of those people has to try it and see it to believe it. Anywho, you guys are probally right. Ill save up a bit more and get the nicer card so I'll be on top of things. The only reason I was looking at the 5200 is because its a standard PCI card. sure it'd be slow but my mobo doesnt have PCI-E or AGP currently. So maybe Ill upgrade my board first, eh? Thanks again, :p

Unless, there is some kind of adapter, we might have to stick to a 5-series card.
ecotrojan
erm, forgive my ignorance, I have a dual xeon server with an AGP 6600? I didnt realise that NVidia made 6600 in pci-e flavour?
jakedman790
lol a pci to pci-e adapter card, that would be nice. but i dont think such thing exsists. and dont worry about going off topic, I was going to ask him/her to post the flash thing anyway.
