which Athlon XP mobo?

Recommended Posts

I'm still thinking of building my own PC :)

I want an Athlon XP processor, don't flame me, I thought I try switching from Intel.

Anyways, my friend gave me this site to look at:

http://www.bzboyz.com/

I think I should get a mobo combo. Can someone suggest to me which board combo I should get? Which brand is good? I'm thinking XP 1800+ - 2200+, something that be fast for a couple of years to come.

I'm partial to the MSI (Microstar) boards ... the value is usually excellent (same can be said for Gigabyte).

If you go MSI ... go to the KT3-Ultra (the ARU version if you want RAID). I can't comment on the price on your site because I am used to Canadian pricing.

Go to Anandtech.com or tomshardware.com and look at the MB reviews. Pays to do your homework first. What is your preference in strengths, OC capability and flexibility or simple and stable? Also these sites have current price guides.

I have always had good luck with Asus. Abit is also good, but have had some quality problems with specific models.

MSI and Gigibyte are also good boards as are many others, but as I said do your homework first. The prices on the site you posted are a tad high.

Right now I am running an Abit KR133-R. It is extremely fast and stable. The newer boards now support DDR-333, but memory speed is currently not a bottleneck on the Athlons.

Speaking for the MSI board...

I am a system builder and i just built 40 machines for a company using these boards. and i did not have a single problem.

very stable running win2k with raid .

when you build as many machines as i do at my work. getting 40 out of 40 boards without problems is very good.

yeah, the prices on bzboards kind of look high, any suggestions on better sites? I would go with pricewatch is just that I'm not so sure of about some of the retailers.

I got my Abit MAX AT7 Motherboard and love the damn thing! No Legacy ports and talk about holding you for a couple years to come:

12 IDE Ports

10 USB (4 USB 2.0)

3 Firewire ports

No Parallel ports

No PS/2 ports (i never used those anyways)

Gotta love this board!!! It's a bit expensive but cheaper than when i bought it.... about $50 cheaper now.. :) Wanna buy mine? LOL KIDDIN... cuz i'm not selling this board. I'll sell my CPU and everything else but this board will be with me for a couple years and serve for a couple upgrades.

Abit KX7-333's quite a good mobo too, although I only just bought this system yesterday. So far, though, it's a beast! Fast and real stable, and you gotta love Softmenu III. ;)

Oh, and it's cheap - $230 AUD.

I doubt anyone would flame you for going with an Athlon XP, and if they did, they oughta get a few flames back themselves!
