JuGGalo
i have only had external modems all up there is no difference between external or internal but i will say this 2 years ago during a lighting storm i lost a USR extrenal modem thankfully the lighting only took out the modem but it left me thinking if the modem was internal what else could have been damaged?? only difference i have seen is price internal modems are around 1/2 the price. but take the above info into thought do ya wanna take the risk i know i will never own an internal modem now
BananaMan
Despite JuGGalo's comments, there is quite a difference between internal and external modems. Internal modems rely on software (Windows) to modulate and demodulate data (as in, convert it from data into analogue sound data for transmission over a phone line, and vice versa), where as external modems modulate and demodulate data on their own. Simply put, external modems are more reliable, have a higher tolerance to line noise and often just that little bit faster, where as internal modems will drop your connection at the drop of the hat if even the tiniest bit of phone line noise cuts in. There are exceptions, I've heard of one or two internal modems that act just the same as external, but they are few are far between. I'm pretty sure what I have said just then is factually correct, but I don't claim to be a modem mastermind or anything :p so I might have got something a little wrong. If so, someone else will correct me. Cheers! P.S. JuGGalo, surge protectors cost around $10 ;)

No, only "winmodem" use CPU time and because of extra CPU instructions MMX SSE 3DNOW, they don't slow down any moder system anymore. Go with an expensive internal if you want, but internal winmodems are just as good. Also, if you do have line noise, a more expensive modem my help some. JodyWatts
My preferance is an external modem. I like to have the ability to turn off the modem if it get "hung" without having to reboot the computer. True, this doesn't happen ofter .... but it is nice.
vf-
hmm odd you reckon external is faster BananaMan i had an external isdn modem from BT was ok, alot faster than 56k then got internal isdn card it kicks pants of external for speed especialy for gaming tho 1 thing i love about internernal is their dirt cheap external isdn ?100 internal isdn ?20 JuGGalo i have only had external modems all up there is no difference between external or internal but i will say this 2 years ago during a lighting storm i lost a USR extrenal modem thankfully the lighting only took out the modem but it left me thinking if the modem was internal what else could have been damaged?? thats what surge masters are forOriginally posted by wattsja My preferance is an external modem. BrendanWOR
External modems might be slightly better, but I personally prefer internal ones :)
JnCoKiLLa
Internels are the best when it come down to it theres less stuff on your desk and well they work better....
Vinh
It depends, if your just using windows, stick with internal and save some cash baby. If your going to use linux later on or something then stick with external.
iczman
P.S. JuGGalo, surge protectors cost around $10 ;) [/b] actually don't spend that less on a surge... if u really want "surge" then get a $30 one cuz most of those $10 are simply just power cord extensions:)
JuGGalo
the surge went throught the phone line not power lines and phone surge busters aint worth the money a telstra tech told me they fail more than they work
