Question

hey everyone... i wanted to upgrade my bios but i'm wondering if it's recommended to do this and if there are any risks?

I got a ABIT KT7E and i have no problems with it... i taught that maybe upgrading will give some more options...

but should i upgrade it?

if you're not having any issues, i would just leave it. unless you like having everything up to date. it's pretty easy to do. just make sure the power doesn't go out while it's flashing.

yeah..if the power goes out while its in the process of flashing the BIOS, your board is dead..toast..

when it comes to the BIOS, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". if you're not having trouble with your current one, then don't bother.

look waht i get:

Update BIOS code.

Enhance ISA PnP compatibility.

Enhance SCSI adapters compatibility.

Add 1400(133) Athlon support for KT7A/KT7A-RAID.

Add new option "1200 above" for high speed Athlons with 100FSB. KT7 / KT7-RAID / KT7A / KT7A-RAID / KT7E only support 1.4G(100) Athlon with L1 bridges disconnected. Check L1 before you buy a CPU please!

For Creative SBLive 5.1 sound card users, you may try these two options while experience sound quality issue.

PCI master read caching, default setting=Disabled

PCI master time-out, Default setting=1

Setting above options to Disabled/3 will lead to the same result with VIA Latency patch V0.14 and may help SB Live 5.1 sound issue. If the system experiences low performance after these settings, enable the "PCI master read caching" please.

Enhance the high speed 133FSB Athlon stability for KT7A/KT7A-RAID.

HPT 370 RAID BIOS version 1.11.0402 for KT7-RAID/KT7A-RAID. This BIOS version is also for non RAID boards and HPT BIOS will be automatically disabled while RAID controller chip not detected.

my mobo is a KT7E

it's pretty painless and easy these days though, i update mine even when i don't need to. i've never had a problem. also, make sure to read and understand the directions.

hmm, that's a lot of updates. maybe you should go for it.:ninja:

whoopee
Enhance ISA PnP compatibility.

do you use ISA cards? if so, maybe you want this. if not, doesn't apply to you.

Enhance SCSI adapters compatibility.
same as above. do you use SCSI adapters? if not, doesn't apply to you.

doesn't apply to you. you dont have this board.

do you plan on upgrading your CPU sometime SOON? if not, then this doesn't matter.

do you have an SBLive? if so, do you hear sound crackling every so often? you may want to upgrade if you do. if you don't have problems with sound or no SBLive, then this doesn't matter.

hope that helped break down your decision.

EDIT: I'm not trying to scare you. Alot of people update their BIOS when they don't need to without problem. There are serious factors though such as..if anything goes wrong, for whatever reason, your MB is dead. Also, if you're not experiencing problems now, upgrading the BIOS could introduce problems you didn't have before.

When it comes to the BIOS, I upgrade if I need to. I have an ABIT KT7A, and I updated my BIOS to get that SBlive fix because I was having trouble with corrupted data, sound crackling and spontaneous system reboots. If I didnt have any of those problems, I'd still be on my original BIOS...
