Crazy idea

Recommended Posts

Not sure if this is the spot, but here goes.

I just came up with the idea to build my own TiVo, seeing as us Canadians don't have one. I was wondering if anyone can provide some help or links to parts (hardware, case, ect) Thinking mainly of using an old motherboard and a K6-2 proc. Not sure on os as I want it to load up fast.

Looking forward to replies,

Michael

I think TIVO is that TV which hasa built in video recorder. So if you get called away by the phone or something you set it to record, the wehn you come back you just play it. If the program hasnt finished it will carry on recording as well, so you dont miss anything.

Just get an All in Wonder Card from ATI. No sense in going through all that extra work.

Got the TV Wonder VE, it sucks.

Yeah, well unless it's some specific problem you have with it, don't expect much more from some TiVo clone. I've seen TiVo...it is FAR from amazing. And for all the Americans out there, it is also FAR from worth the $400 it costs.

Its actually a box you hook up to your TV. It lets you digitally record anything you want, pause live TV and even skip commericals :) I just bought an ATI ALL-IN-WONDER Radeon 7500, its not the same thing, the quality is much better if you use a TIVO, more features 2

Oh...you're talking about one of those crazy "computer" things, aren't you :p

No, just ignore my advice, if you've got a plan, go for it. I was just assuming you had missed out on tv-in cards and was going to do it the hard way by building your own.

Well, I'll have a shot and giving some advice, but you probably know more than I :)

For a case, I would go for a Lian-Li PC9300, it's a micro-atx case which is what you're probably going to want, it's smaller and will be able to provide all you need for the kind of set-up your aiming at. Here's a picture..

For the processer, I would probably go for an AMD Duron. That's just personal preference though!

For a tv tuner card, well, I would imagine that any decent one with a remote would do, but for the sake of it, I would go for Hauppauge cards, here's a link.

On the software side, I would opt for Cyberlink PowerVCR II. I don't think it has way it can be controlled by remote control in the program, but you can just download another 3rd party program that can control specific programs by a macro-programming-esque like system via remote. One such example of a program is SlyControl [link], I've had good experiences with this program, there's plenty more out there though.

Hope what I said is somewhat useful to you, cheers!

EDIT: Forgot to mention, Cyberlink PowerVCR II allows for you to pause live TV and record TV digitally and replay it later, etc etc

If you get a Hauppage WinTV be sure to get a PCI version. I don't think the USB ones would be good for this kind of task. I got one (USB) for cheap and it is good for watching TV but not for video capture. That's why most serious external video products use firewire. =?
