sitzmar
I am looking at getting a new video card in a month or two, primarily because my TNT2 is starting to show its age, but also because I would like tv out capabilities. Right now I am leaning towards a GF4 4200 because it has both tv out and a DVI connector (not that I need DVI, but its nice to have options). My dilema is that I'm not sure my system would be able to pump out enough data for me to notice any difference between the 4200 and a much cheaper GF4 MX card. So what do you think? Would there be a noticable difference between the cards? btw I can only do AGP 2x, check sig for system specs
thingsforjason
get the 4200. :) when you upgrade your processor you'll still be able to use it. the ti card will give you the extra features that the mx card won't.
HoboCop
yep get the 4200 only if ur gonna upgrade that system (ie total tear down ;) ) but if u arent then just go with the geforce 4mx just because its more cost effective... [EDIT] whoops didnt see the 1.2ghz just saw the p2 350 lol go for the 4200!!!
nomis_nehc
to effectively answer your question: you won't notice jack between those two simply because the bottleneck is your cpu speed. if you aren't going to upgrade other aspects of your system for some time, I would just recommend you to get the MX. and let's say you won't get a new system for like a year. by that time, there will be better deals than 4200 anyways. sitzmar
Yah, ill be running this system for awhile, at least another year... big things are gonna happen soon, (serialATA, 64-bit processors, ect) so it really doesnt make much sense to buy a new system now. I dont suppose anybody could point me in the direction of benchmarks of these cards on an older system? I havent looked yet, but I thought I would ask anyways. another thought i just had... im not really sure how necessary a DVI connector is... might a better and cheaper route be to get a GF3 ti card? according to toms hardware guide the performance of the ti 500 and the GF4 4200 are pretty close
liar2
I say just go for the ti4200. i'm thinking of getting one myself. i'm sure my AMD 1.3 GHz will bottleneck it a bit too, but it would be nice to have tv out capabilities. and i really want to play newer games with all the new features of directx8 because my geforce2 mx isn't quite as powerful to the games of today as it was to the games of the past. JnCoKiLLa
throw out the P2 350 and build another one beacse it can't do anything in this day and age.......
ABzHQ2k
I've got an MX440 and must say the quallity of my games is excellent now, good frame rate and visual quality plus the tv-out is at 1024x768 and although not the best i dont really notice much difference when sat back a bit from the tv, can even read text without to much eye strain. I'd say if you want a cheap card go with the mx although you can get a GeForce3 Ti200 for about the same price which would be better quality (just going on what i've read not used one myself), but the Ti4200 aint that expensive really now. Good luck deciding.
