as i said before

i had a virus a while ago. it infected EVERY .exe file i had on my computer.

all i did was download a scanner, ran it in dos and it removed the virus from all files in 20mins!

only format if scanning doesn't work

If you actually read all the infected files he has, you'd have noticed that there are even several backdoors and trojans.

I'd suggest (as previously stated) to format, install the OS, then a good up to date antivirus and firewall.

I would recommend you to format your hard disk and reinstall the OS again and put the antivirus software. Don't forget to download and install latest virus definitions and have your computer scan regularly.

Formatting the computer would serve 2 purposes in this case:

1. Would ensure that the computer was clean and did not have ANY viruses on it.

2. After all the trouble of getting it built back up and all the programs and data reloaded/restored .... he might would learn to run a virus scanning program and keep the virus definitions up to date!

Normally, I wouldn't recommend formatting the computer ... but in this case

I would also suggest that after you format, reinstall, install and update your anti-virus program, that you scan any media (floppy, cd-rom and/or zip disk) that you may have used for backup purposes before using them on your pc because they could also be infected. Case in point, I once had some old floppies that I used to backup some files. The diskettes were infected with the Win95.CIH virus. I didn't know this until I did a manual scan of each floppy and Norton detected the infection. :s

Then again, if you have up-to-date anti-virus software on your machine and attempt to use any media that's infected, your virus-killer :dead: should kick in and warn you :ponder:

Also, see if this program would be of interest to you - Trojan Remover - http://www.simplysup.com/tremover/index.html

Download an AV program and then do a scan. If that fails then format, i just formated a couple of days ago and my computer is running fine. How did you get all those virii by the way? Well, good luck.

You have way too many infected files on that system. Reformat and start by installing your OS. Next time you should learn to avoid using risky behaviors when running programs as you won't know which is a virus and which is not. :(

Standard Windows NT troubleshooting:

Reboot, if that fails, reload! j/k

Get a AV run the scan. If that does not fix it, then format and reload. Or take this as the perfect time to get a new computer :)

I got these viruses for a long time ago.. ABout 4 years now.. Nothing is happenning, except sometimes, like once in every six months, those circles and red & white X show up when I open any application file. That all it does.. Nothing else.. I'm just gonna download that antivirus program to get rid of the virus.. I won't format my PC.

If it didn't get rid the viruses, I'll use Norton 2002, then I just leave it it like that if it doesn't work.

DoubleTT, I have to say that's not a wise choice. Yes, the W95 virus is just going to be annoying. Its the Black Oriface and the backdoor virri you should worry about. These are opening big gaping holes in your system for people who might want to use far sinister virri on your system.

Format, Reinstall, install an anti-virus program, keep it up to date, quit going to the dark side of the web for your downloads.

It doesn't mean if nothing has happened before, nothing will happen now. It's always better to get rid of them. Just make sure DON'T LEAVE IT LIKE THAT, DON'T! Try using several (updated)different anti-virus programs and see if they are effective, if not, better backup your important data, and format rite away.

Better to be safe now than sorry later.

why not just install your current os ontop of itself?

windows should isntall new files ontop of the old system files. no problem

or at least install to a new directory (if you dont have a multi boot setup). and then get rid of the old one, cuz youll be going off the new files.

Man.. My Stop-Sign scan the Protector Plus 2000 has that Win 95 virus too. Protector Plus 2000 can't disinfect some of my .exe files..

Will norton antivirus 2002 will get rid those viruses too, even backdoor, win 32 virus, trojan, etc??
