Don't get the Radeon 9000 and PC low polygon performance

Recommended Posts

The GF4Ti does about 50MTriangles/sec in 3dmark2000 which, I belive, is way too low in these days. The R300 as you know is quoted 325MT/sec which is satesfying, but it's "cheap" brother 9000Pro only do 35MT/sec. If gfx-card manufactorers keep holding back on the polygon performance in the budget marked we will never see any high-polycount games on the PC platform, in my opinion and observation of course (both Max Payne and Warcraft 3 have very low polygon count and Giants + Comanche is pretty choppy on my GF3 Ti 500).

My friends GF2MX scores almost as much as my GF3ti 500, 17MT/s vs 18MT/s, in 3dmark2001se High Polygon Count test. A year later, the GF3 is only half as fast as the PS2, no we wont see any nice high-poly games for a long time.

Even Doom3 is low-poly:

Ok so doom3 isnt finished and that was the "low detail" setting I belive but still...

And UT2003 isn't any much better if you look at the fingers of the hands holding the weapon. The weapons aren't that bad, but the levels seem very sparingly here and there. XBox' DOA3 has even fingernails in adition to round fingers, but that game uses the HOS functionality of the XGPU, which Doom3 does not use on the GF4. ProjectGotham with it's curved cars + real-time reflections is another example of the XGPU being used to it's fullest.

Just some thoughts.

And if we all could purchase computers with an itanium in them more companies would include 64 bit support in games. Not everyone can afford high quality video cards. And most people who are gamers don't purchase cards that are "underperforming."

The bottom line is this:

1. Most people can't afford top of the line video cards.

2. Video game companies want to "tailor" their software to as many people as possible (wider player base = more income).

Imagine if a video game company made a game that only runs on systems with 1 Gigabyte of memory, a miniumum clockspeed of 2 Ghz, and a quadro 4. They'd have what, 100 customers? Less? I'd rather see BETTER GAMEPLAY in my games than more gay ass eyecandy.

man, I don't know what you are on, but Doom 3's graphics is good enough for me... for now. And for your UT2003 criticism, serisouly, who the hell is going to pay attention to fingers when you are trying to take someone's head off?!

So you'd be happy with UT2003 if it had Wolf3D style graphics? I agree that graphics aren't the most important think in a game, but it's still important.

GamblerFEXonlin isn't saying you should buy expensive cards - he's saying you shouldn't buy budget cards at present so that in future budget cards don't hold back game graphics. ie. either don't buy now or buy expensive now so in future you can buy cheap.

Why, do you try to run like 50 instances of Quake 3 at once? Are you really so diluted that you think having 2 gigabytes of ram is actually going to give you better performance when playing a game that might use 300 megabytes?
