cloned420
Before I start with my crap load of problems here are my Specs, System Specs: MB: Abit KT7A-Raid w/bios 7n CPU: AMD Thunderbird 1400mhz@1400mhz RAM: 2-512mb 1-256mb pc-133 micron ram VID: ChainTech Gf4 4600 TI (30.30 Dets) AUDIO: SoundBlaster Live 5.1 Mp3 NIC: 3Com Pci 10/100 PSU: 430w Antec Well guys my problem is this, I just got my Geforce 4 4600 ti in the mail yesterday and so far it?s been giving me a run for my money (in a bad way) the first thing that I encountered was that GTA3 will NOT play for more than 5 seconds (no matter what) I?ve downloaded the M$ patch for problems with NVIDIA cards and it still did not work so I thought what the hell Ill run a full windows update and still nothing. I proceeded to install some of the other games I own like Sof II, Myst 3, and Jedi knight II; from everything I tested it seemed to work ok I was getting good frame rates and smooth graphics but the fact that GTA3 just crashes was still ****in me off, so I decided to do a full reinstall of xp since my last format was about 6 months ago. I did all the usual things before my reinstall like check for a new bios flash (which there was), download the latest drivers for my hardware and so on, with all that done I ?thought? I was ready so I popped my floppy in to do the bios flash and my xp cd for the install, I flashed my bios without a hitch and proceeded to do the install. At first everything was going like clockwork, the blue screen that sez windows xp setup popped up the drivers started to load at the bottom of the screen but when it got to the part where it sez starting windows (just after xp loads all the raid drivers etc..) I would get this black screen with red dots all over it and my pc would go no :(rther :( I tried rebooting, messing with bios settings, removing all cards and drives except c: and the vid card, I even tried going back to the old bios all to no avail finally I had no choice I poped my old vide card (Matrox g450 dual head) back into the pc started setup and bam it work:( fine :( at this point I was SUPER ****ed that I just paid $300 for a card I cant even use to install windows. Never the less I pressed on and let windows do its install thinking maybe there would be a workaround or something and that?s why I am writing this post, cuz I?m dying here I swear I've tried everything. By the way just for the hell of it I reinstalled GTA3 with the M$ patch for NVIDIA cards and guess what it still crashes :(ter 5 sec :( Any help or incite would be deeply appreciated Thanks in advance Cloned420 lucidcreations@hotmail.com
Meltdown07
I've had a similar problem before with windows install. It was related to me having more than one device plugged into the graphics card. If you have tvout or the second output hooked up, disconnect them. When i did this, the install went without a hitch. Another thing to try, maybe plug your monitor into the other monitor out, but I dont know why that would make a difference, but hell its probably worth a shot. I did do as you mentioned and made sure nothing else was plugged into the card and still the same thing happened and i also used the dvi-2-d-sub converter for the second output and the only diffrence was that insted of a black screen with red dots i just got a black screen :(

nWo4100
The Geforce 4 Ti series requires a very big power supply(300W +). So maybe your power supply can't take your video card and your computer is working like crazy to run games. GTA3 is a heavy game! Also XP has this sort of "PC protection" , Xp check's your PC to see if everything is all right, if not it will automaticly shutdown before your PC overheat's or something goes wrong. Anyway, I would check to see if your power supply is strong enough. Maybe you have a strong ps, but you have so much hardware plug to it, it is to working hard. I would also check with the manufacturer of the video card, they can help you more than this forum.
Amadeke
Since the problems started with the GF i would suggest you test the card in another system to see if it works fine there if not then you have definitely found the problem if it does work you have some more searching to do the GTA3 working for only 5 secs is weird tho
Cron0
cloned420: I had the same proglem with my Geforce4. Anything I was doing (even letting my windowsXP idle) would lead me to a crashwith red dots all over the screen and my computer doing beep beep beep beep (yeah like that Apple ad of Ellen Feiss). I found out that the pins on the card did not make a good contact with the AGP slot. Some arrangement of Case/Motherboard/AGP Card can cause the card to be misplacer in the AGP slot even if it seems straight in. #1- Try to remove your card and re-insert it but try to not push the rightmost hand of the card too far, leaving the little plastic AGP Card protection not completely "locked". I hope you understand, it's hard to explain :s #2- Get everything that came with your AGP Card, Instrution booklet, Demo CDs, Drivers, and the card. Put them back in the Box and return to the shop you bought it to get another one that will work OK :) When I had that defect card, theses two solutions worked fine the the last one was the best one since now my new card is working great! Hope it'll help you out!

Vlad
I had the exact same problem a few months ago (only with a geforce 3 ti 200). It turned out the problem was related to memory timing issues (unfixable hardware problem). Sometimes I could get the card to work all the way into an hour of gaming, other times my computer would blue screen during the XP boot process. I also tried a clean install of XP and had the same problems you're describing. So I'm going to recommend you do exactly what I did: SEND YOUR CARD BACK FOR A NEW ONE! After I sent my card back and got the replacement (took me a weekend and a couple days to send and get back) everything worked fine without a hitch. And for future reference, don't buy chaintech. Their hardware BLOWS. I've heard PNY is pretty bad too. Try to stick with ASUS/Leadtek(iffy)/Creative (I've had good experiences with them, at least, video card wise :s). Good luck. cloned420
Well folks I fixed my infinate loop BSOD errors with my Gf4 4600 ti :) for the past few days I have been pulling my hair out trying to understand why this video card i just spent $300 on was a complete Peice of sh.it but it turns out there is a fix (at least for my chipset and board) below is a link to the forum I was able to uncover this info. The awnser seems to lie in a memory register RX55 to be exact but from what I have read its not in the same place on all boards, but its "offical" name is Memory Write Queue (MWQ) timer The patch I installed closes this register in the bios mabye this quote from the viaarena forum will help you guys understand what I mean "The MWQ timer is actually a timing device included in the memory host controller to prevent write data being held in the memory queue too long. After the data has been in the queue too long it times out. This timed out data is then given a higher write request priority. Now that might sound nice ? a bit of extra performance BUT the procedure fails when overloaded. 3D games and Win XP put too much load on the memory queuing timer procedure. The nVidia new driver exaggerates the problem even more as the driver enables nVidia cards to use even more memory than previous driver versions" I highly seggust that if you are having the infinate loop BSOD error on an nvidia card you look into this, lastly I would like to say thanks to all of you who pointed me in the right direction Link to thread <--- Download Patch <---
montane
Glad you solved your problem, Cloned420. Next time, try this: Display Properties>Settings>Advanced>Troubleshoot And once there, check to activate "Enable write combining". ****************************************** AMD Athlon XP 2100+ ABIT KX7-333R Macron Power 400 watts ThermalTake Orbs 7000 rpm Twin Radial Fin ThermalTake A1414 DDR Copper Heat Spreader Kingston 512 MB 2700 DDR x2 Maxtor DiamondMax D540X Plus 80 GB 7200 rpm Ultra ATA 133 Maxtor DiamondMax D540X Plus 60 GB 7200 rpm Ultra ATA 133 Asus V8460 Ultra Deluxe GF4 Ti4600 w nVidia 29.42 Hitachi CM715 19?
