The Best Video Card - ATI vs nVidia

Recommended Posts

I have been out of the loop for over a year now and I have skipped most of the articles that has been written that highlight this product or that product over the last 18 months.

Somewhere along the line, I develop the idea that nVidia was better - who knows what piece of information led me to believe that.....

I am looking to get a kick-ass video card...so what do I get?

I am looking for Video-In/Out, DVI....

I would like to do real-time Windows Media 8 encoding (via PVR products like SnapStream).

What other features are important today?

Is 128MB the standard?

I am not a huge gamer...more of a video guy/movies/etc..

How do high(er)-end audio cards come into play? i.e. Does it matter what video card I have if I want to do 5.1 audio out?

I am trying to keep price under $300-350?

So hit me with your opinions....

I should add that the recently relase AIT Video Card - Radeon 9700.....is this worth the hype?

A friend had an ATI ALL-In-Wonder, he renamed it to All-In-Blunder, he has had a tons of problems mainly with XP drivers....

Well, nVidia dosn't really make there cards, they just make the chip design, then other companys make the chip, I think ATI's make there's but I could be wrong. :paranoid:

they used to make them solely. Now they are letting third parties make the cards.

a card with nvidia chip on it will be way more stable then any ati card.

and nvidia has the best driver support by far..

ati drivers suck..

ATi drivers are fine now I gather. Also, the Radeon 9700 beats the Ti4600 by a surprising amount in benchmarks, making me kinda wish I hadn't bought a Ti4600 just a few months ago.

I should say that I've never owned an ATi card, so this is all from other sources. But that also means I'm not an ATi fan who will say anything to convince people that they are the best. It's just that when the 9700 hits the selves, they will be.

The 9700 should be around $400 so it's just outside your budget. The Ti4600 will probably drop - I don't know what price it is now but it should be at most $350! If you're willing to spend that much it could be worth the extra. If you look around, maybe there will be some pre-order offer which gives you a few bucks off.

its a game of LEAP FROG. :)

one company outclasses the other, then that company that was outclassed, outclasses the company that is was previously outclassed by!

:p

ex. Ti 4600 is Beaten by the R9700, then probably the R9700 will be beaten by the NV30, and so goes the tale of the never ending game, of 1-upmanship.
