Depends on how dusty your room is that your computer is in; if it's got A/C on and no pets, every few months. If you have pets (like I do), I blow some compressed air in my case about once a month.

the frequency of which you should clean your computer depends on where your computer is and how often it is used.

a high traffic area and frequent usage usually means your pc insides get substantially dirty often. dustbunnies in some crevices and a blanket of dust over your equipment, mostly seen on the cables and the cards.

i don't recommend what i do, but i swipe dust bunnies with a cotton swab while grounded and i carefully blow the dust blankets, taking care not to spit at the same time.

the best thing adviced that i've read is to use compressed air to blow the dust away from the computer and use a vacuum (metallic preferred, as opposed to all plastic which can cause esd) to suck up the blown dust.

I usually use my vacuum with the horse hair attachment.

It's real horse hair, so no chance of ruining something.

I usually take it completely apart once a year, and vacuum all the cards and blow out the power supply with a can of compressed air.

i usually use a vacuum blower ( not sucker) to clean up the dust, it is much safer than using the vacuum sucker to suck out the dust....but u must do it outside the house or else the dust will fly all over ur house:P

Air canisters work really well, I use them every couple of months. To keep it a bit cleaner: I also have 5 fans in my system and it seems to keep dust levels down. Keep the system off the ground too. I've found less dust gets in the system.

If you're on a budget.......

you could just take a huge breath suck in all the dust, run to a door or window and just blow out all the dust outside. Its cheap if you don't have a vaccuum or a air canister. Its also recommended to plan ahead and already have the window or door open first.
