i've just installed steam and it's now running. now all my other apps are running really slow. from task manager its saying its only using 6,790 k now but it was something like 40,000 k

is this normal for steam? looks like a pretty basic app, ive also got 2gb pc3200 ram and amd athlon 64 3000+ so didnt think it would be a problem?

is steam is updating a game, it will draw more ram and cpu, check on your steam game list to see if it is updating any games

If you have 2GB of RAM, why do you worry about +/- 40MB??

The new steam is a bit of a memory hog, yes. Just quit the program when you're not using it - saves everything then.

unless ur other applications are running slow when steam is NOT running, then i would worry, dont worry so much if they are running slow when steam is running, steam updates (like everyone else mentioned) i recomend that u go to steam settings and remove it from starting up when windows starts, that way it only loads when u wanna play games. If its really slowing down your computer extremly, according to your specs, i would say u test ur ram and make sure ur porcessor is working fine.
