0 Ethen
I really like Sideshow. It just needed a update to the UI, and some minor fixes. The first thing I did with my copy was remove all the redundancy. A minimize and close button at the very top in luna style are not needed and only detract. Right clicking any where on the bar you have the option to close or hide it. You can also control it from the icon in the notification tray in windows. The "new ticket" button at the very bottem of sideshow also is redundant, providing you can add tickets by right clicking in a group. Once you remove the bitmaps that make up this button theres more room for ticket groups. Once you put more groups on the sideshow then it can disply you get the roll down feature. Uglyness is here too, I re did these buttons using muted colors to match the background i made for it. To make a good background, just turn off use "xp schemes" and choose a large jpg the reason you use a .jpg bigger then the bar itself is to prevent tilign on the sub menus. To update allot of parts of its default UI just play around in the .dlls for sideshow. Its also easy to remove the splash screen alltogether so when you open up sideshow you get right to the bar. The little show hide groups is also again redundant, as sideshow auto provides these fetures on mouse over of any group. To re create your start menu in sideshow creat a directory and make folders in it using diffrent CLSID values for elements already in windows. Check out the html osx dock thread here on neo win for info on this. Then point sideshow to these applications. Thats is how I was able to get things like "Network places" "command prompt" "Run" "control pannel" etc in sideshow. To update the icons like for start etc, from the old windows flag to the new just edit the bitmaps for them. With a bit of work you can get it looking pretty close to the way the side bar was in the MSN Iterative prototype video. To expand the groups even further, take a look at how msn explorer works. Here on neowin a way to extract microsofts .mar format was already found. In side msn explorers mars, there are allot of web based code which you can borrow over and use to build up your own parts in sideshow. When you use the create tickets from and htm page, just remember the sideshow tickets are basically a big web page, with little code hooks that give side show tickets fuctionality on the bar. Theres even a basic structure like with a webpage. It uses IE quite a bit. So anything you can do in IE you can with some toying get to go in side show. This includes XML, as long as you script in a paraser. Thats is how I was able to get weather working by making my own weather ticket. It can also display flash, which you can use to come up with other intresting tickets. I used a flash movie with macromedias xml format to pull xml feeds from moreover.com for news. You could do this with just straight dhtml/xml. Adding a ticket for webradio also is a good use too. There is info on msdn for using media player in html documents, just write a few up, name them to your favorite streams, and give the appropriate link to the stream. The easiest of all to do was the traffic cam ticket. I found my city has a good traffic cam at www.cfcnplus.ca It was easy enough to embed. I ignored the default markup for cam refreshing and instead just set sideshow to force a refresh every so many minutes. Any thing less then 1 minute will cause slow down on older systems. In the msn video, when gugahimer sp? clicked some items on the side bar, the gropu would slide open, except the background would be a very dark blue, giving a cut in look to the bar. To recreate this in sideshow, just make up icons larger then the bar width itself (side show lets you use any size) and assign these to the group as the background. You can use any basic icon editior to do up large squares to fit in as the background for a groups, giving on slide opening a cut in look. If you look closely the sideshow bar has a default large rectangle look. But the backround employes transperancy at the corners to give it a rounded shape. Removing those attributes lets you square it all off, too give a linear new type of task bar look. I read around the net about msn 8 and its new dashboard feature where you can pull the dashboard out of the explorer and put it on your desktop. I think its a good idea. But being msn you know it will have the ads. :p I dont like ads on my dektop. With the sideshow leak although its rough and just needs a bit of care to bring it all up to par, it doesnt have any of the customization locked out of it. You can literally add to it whatever kind of content you want. Want google? Go grab the api or the google web search tool. Stick it in your sideshow. Adding things like google is something msn would never do as it detracts from the msn search. I hope people will come up with some more tickets and content for sideshow. Because its old and left in such a quickly unfinished state to server the purpose of research, it was left as an open bar. Something you can take and really play with. Because of its builtin back up tickets and layout feature, and a safe mode, its surprisingly stable to use often. I think sideshow is the ultimate power tool as its been said. Its basically microsoft saying here is a side strip for your desktop that you can do anything you want in. It will be neat to see how they combine the sideshow idea in future products. The only downside is total customization will be lost as it is with any app, once its been signed sealed and delivered. Hopefully micrsoft will one day open everything up to let the user be in control, but I doubt it :p

You can literally add to it whatever kind of content you want. The MSN Dashboard has one rotating server-side ad embedded in the application at the very bottom. It advances with each mouse click within MSN Explorer..and advances at a timed interval when docked within the Windows UI. Unlike say MSN Messenger, I haven't yet seen a non-MSN ad displayed here. (which I personally don't mind...I have found I click on them now and again..links to MSNBC.com articles, MSN Specials etc) MSN does offer the rotating ad to third parties...but it is relatively expensive, & MSN restricts the number of non-MSN ads to a bare minimum. 0 McKrout
ok, i have an idea for this little tool that may benefit many of us, but i know nothing of web coding so im looking for some help. what i wanna do is an aim ticket for all of us aim users and im thinking that this could be done by loading aim express in a tool tip window or perhaps changing aim remote to a bit and the other way, which i think would work pretty good would be that little icon that i see on the bottom of some people sigs that indicates if they are online or not, but i dont know where to find that to try using it for this. at the bottom of this message you see the html needed to load aim remote and where you see the 6 X's in a row, thats where screen name would go. http://www.aol.com/aim/imreg_download_temp...ol&promo=106695"> http://www.aol.com /aim/remote/home.adp"> http://www.aol.com/aim/imreg_download_temp...ol&promo=106695">
0 Ethen
Good work people. I hope the whole thing with tickets takes off. In the Side Show pdf from microsoft reasearch there is an example of a ticket in a web page, that can be loaded into the sideshow with a click. Has anyone tried playing with the mechnism to do this? I am wondering what kinda security sideshow uses in respect to web content. I think it works more like an hta file, where it can by pass local info such as saving to the hardrive. I was able to create a ticket that gives you a web page editor upon slide out. It wasn't to hard to be able to set it to save created web pages right to my hard drive. I think because this is a research project used by microsoft not allot of thought was given to those aspects. I am putting a whole stack of screen shots of my slide show in a web slide show, to give a good show casing of diffrent looks you can give side show. I will upload it later today to a web site. I have also made a nice side show Icon to replace the ugly ticket, I will give that out, and the web page editior ticket. Might come in handy for those editing creating other web tickets and want an easy way to edit html, with out a 3rd party app like frontpage or notepad. AIM remote is a good idea for gaining side show use among non messenger users.
