Hard Drive Optimization

Recommended Posts

I have a Dell-supplied 40gb 7200 UltraATA Hard drive, according to the spec sheet from Dell

maybe its just me, but it seems to be slower than it could be, not running to its full potential, or using optimal settings.

i already have it running NTFS and defrag often, so i should be okay in that respect.

what can i do in terms of drivers and settings, etc to optimize it?

thanks

also, if someone could do so quickly, or point me to a source, briefly explain IDE, ATA, Serial, and all that jazz? thanks

and u sure ur hard drive is running at ata66/100 (whatever ur mobo supports) with the right cables...

sometimes windows does not set the hard drive at optimised configuration... I know I had to change on my other computer so it could run at 66... :ermm:

just go to device manager and then click the plus beside IDE/ATAPI Controllers and then right click Primary Channel and then choose the Advanced TAB to see what mode it's running in...

ata-100 = UDMA Mode 5

ATA-66 = UDMA Mode 4

ATA-33 = UDMA Mode 2

and down.....

No thats normal the primary is probably IDE-0 (connected to your hard drive) and secondayr is probably IDE-1 (connected to your CD-ROM). Its perfectly normal.

Go to advanced settings and look around.
