i3x171um
I had an English teacher once who used :) in everything she wrote... outlines, stories, poems, you name it. And if she liked your writing, she would mark it with a big red :).

R-Flex
No, never. I absolutely hate this example of the butchering of the English language. Seeing such 'MSN' language in formal writing is infuriating, and if I were to be a teacher, regardless of level of education, a 'lol' in a piece of work would be an automatic fail. Failing a student just because he used lol in his essay, while the other portions of the essay was great/good/ok would be more infuriating for the student. Daem0hn
no. essays are meant to be formal. reports are meant to be unbias and hence written from a third person perspective. lol is very informal and cannot be used through the third person perspective. there is no need for laugh out loud in a written assignment as they are meant to be unemotive. i admit i have written ppl a few times though :p
riahc3
well, here in holland, "lol" is a normal word. So i vote yes.lol means fun.. (in dutch that is.) 586830220 Nice excuse :) Yes, I believe they should be allowed, so dumb students can fail. 586830227  Anyways, NO
Jexel
if lol becomes acceptable in essays we might as well throw in brb, rofl and the rest of those acronyms. As a personal thing I just hate online acronyms. I can't imagine what literature would be like if 'lol' was accepted by the oxford dictionary. "In the play 'Midsummer Night's Dream', Shakespear lollified the scene by using themes of rofling in order to generate humour" by bad example

TheDogsBed
There is something called "Proper english, grammer and spelling", if you cant stay along those lines then you may need to consider going into more english classes or maybe read more books and articles. That would be "grammar" then. :) Seriously, as a staunch defender of the English language, I vote a very certain "No". I detest all forms of Internet and Mobile Phone text, even when used in context. To then have them pollute the English language too drives me to despair.

rollinup
I voted no. If kids (or even college/university students.) were allowed to say things like "lol" or "omg" in an essay then we'd start seeing books with them in it and whatnot..I can imagine it now. I walked up to Jim and said "OMGWTFBBQ Jessica is in danger!" "Omg, no way, show me t3h way" :pinch:

bkellner
OH **** THE GRAMMAR NAZIS. Seriously, it's an internet forum. As long as the post is respectfully decent, who really cares if they speel something wrong, or misplace, a comma? I ask that you give up trying to correct every mistake in every post - it's a tech forum, not an English essay. Besides, in the long run, you, will, not, win the batle. Someone wil always reply to ur post wit' spellin and grammer mistakes! See my point? :fun:   :jump: :hump:    :rose:  :innocent: :innocent: :innocent: :uberhump: :blushing: Here's a lot of funny emoticons for you to show that this post wasn't meant as a flame. --- However - I do however think that spelling and grammar should be thought about when posting on these forums. This way Neowin can maintain it's professional look. But we don't need to flame everyone who doesn't live up to each of our expectations - as that also tends to drag down the professional feel of things. Some people are bad with spelling. Some are bad with grammar. It's not your place to tell them how to post. Edited November 20, 2005 by knigitz
Hurmoth
Until it is in the standard dictionary (i.e. Oxford English Dictionary, Merriam-Webster Dictionary, etc.), which I don't see happening in the foreseeable future, it should not be allowed on school papers, unless you are quoting what someone else has said in an online conversation and even then I would personally change the "lol" to "[laughing out loud]" so that the instructor knows what you're trying to state.
