Litespeed
There is something called "Proper english, grammer and spelling", if you cant stay along those lines then you may need to consider going into more english classes or maybe read more books and articles. 586827662 Yeah, ummm, it's spelt "grammar". :D

amrinders87
oh boy. do you realize most people type lol without actually laughing out loud? in internet speak it has been changed to basically mean "oh thats funnay!!!1111!!oneone!!!" I'll admit, I use it for that to, but there's no reason you should ever use that when speaking, or when writing a paper. If you find yourself doing that or you have to catch yourself, then you might want to consider pressing the windows key + u, s, then enter... this will free you from your prison known as your computer which you obviously spend more time in front of than you should. Pick up the phone, go drink a beer, nail a prostitute, play basketball... whatever... as long as it doesn't involve "lol".edit... warning... those key combinations there will shut down more windows pcs. don't actually do it unless you really intend on shutting down your pc. you've been warned. i take no responsibility for your stupidity. 586827683 Exaclty, LOL is so overy used. I vote No.
Garry
It's not in the dictionary. It is an acronym. It is slang. No.
tOta
These "words" lol,omg are made for faster and easier writing/communication on net. We have mouth and if we are not too lazy we can instead of lol laugh ou load or to say omg ;) So i think we shoudnt use "lol" and other similar words IRL ;) Sometimes for a joke i say lol and laugh like hell or wtf :D But rearly and just for a joke. In elementery school we had a good english teacher (young women,, 25-26). Once she said did we known any words that like shorten version. He wrote 4ever and said anybody knows more? I stud up and wrote hall board with internet slangs hehe. Some ppl in my class were "WTF :D is this" *They said What the **** not WTF* :D Another example, when we had to write a school paper about some product that we wanted to make i wrote about gaming mouse :o (14 then was hardcore in gaming not any more). She understand that and i got a A. Some other older teachers would be lame and i would got a D. Deppends what the teacher is like.
stu markham
Some say that letting lol in will open the floodgates to let all manner of acronyms in. Maybe that's true. Fact is, most people out there don't know what lol means, but then most people don't know what autoenucleation means, and it's not in the dictionary either. coolchan
What if the essay is about internet lingo? 586827892 I voted yes, only that if it's used in the context of internet lingo. I have heard once a guy said "lol" in real life. Took me a second to get it. He sounded so stupid!
y0sh
I don't agree with any internet acronym being allowed. I write essays in the most professional ways and I believe it should stay that way. Even if "lol" was allowed, I don't see where you could use the 'word' in an essay. Firstly, most essays are written in 3rd person. Secondly, "laugh out loud" isn't grammatically correct when writing an essay (When referring to I, You, He/She or They - future & past tense), unless you took 'lol' to mean 'laughing out loud'. And if you take "lol" to mean laughing, then it no longer applies for present tense. If you take it to mean 'laugh' then you'll need a new acronym for past/future, perhaps "LOL-ing"? Anyway, for present tense, I'm more inclined to use "I laugh aloud" instead of "I laugh out loud", but I guess that is just my personal style of speech. Unless we have both "lol" AND "lol-ing", it is easier to use our current method. Still, who really uses the phrase "laugh out loud" in an essay? "I lol everytime my rabbit humps my neighbor's cat"? "My friends lol whenever I help a blind woman cross the street and leave her in the middle"? Its a joke! You can't use it seriously.
BluePhlame1337
as long as lol is used in the right context it's alright. ex: Some examples of internet acronyms include; lol, j/k, and idk.
Ji@nBing
Of course not. If your using lol in an essay, you need to get off the computer once in a while.
zheng.93
Using the 3 words lol casually is okay, (even I use it all the time). Just make sure it doesen't go out of hand, and NO, it sholudn't be allowed. Quoted from my friend: We use short forms for everything: lol, rofl, boi, lmao. If a person in the 19th century would say we act like barbarians.

spartyjohnson
I believe that the word is 'grammar' not 'grammer'. And English is always capitalized. There are alot more faults in that statement too, but I really don't want to point ALL of them out. ;) 586827674 To be a correction Nazi: it is spelled 'a lot'. JiveMasterT
tell you what... if lol (which is slang) is allowed in school papers then I'm allowed to say ****, ****, ****, ****, ######, dick... There is no reason why you should be laughing out loud when writing a paper, unless it is the rare comedy peice you are asked to write or something. Even then, it doesn't make sense to say lol... just say "... and it was really funny." or something to that effect. Ah, I can see papers of the future. In 14-****in-92, Colombus discovered America. He said it was the ****, and told all of his hommies to come check it out. LOLz!!!111oneone roflcopter edit... fixed the date...
Malisk
I've been using lol so much that that day during my major exams I nearly wrote lol in my essay. So what do you think? I mean lol makes up 99% of the internet (and 99.9% of counter strike chat). 586827641 The question is maybe rather -- should emotional expressions like "*laughing*", "rofl", "*crying*" be allowed in essays? LOL is just one in the bunch to me. I think not, and would rather see a writer that stayed on subject. I'm not really interested in sudden bursts of laughter to the writer when reading about something. In case it's about "I lol'ed at her", I'd rather see it written as "I laughed at her". And whatever you do, don't use a CS chat as a guideline, or even excuse, for what to write in an essay!!
ice430
wat da hell, use lol in the exam? .a u kidding me! im gussing your teacher wasnt aware of this happening. thats so obvious in the dictionary you cannot find words like lol, muah, hehe things like that. these can never go in the exams, not even show in an essay! thats only like those stuff u make wen u internet chatting. and u wouldnt want to bring any of those out when u having an interview aint i right.
