lsdn
Hello, I have a 3COM Tailfin CATV Modem and I'd like to know if I can connect it through a Network Hub to my computer (like MODEM--> HUB--> NIC).... Is there a chance that the Hub could loose the NIC's MAC address ? My specs: M/B: IWILL KK266 CPU: AMD T-Bird @ 1.2GHz RAM: PQI 256MB HDD: Seagate Barracuda ATA III/7200RPMs/2Megs Buffer/30Gig/ATA 100 Video: Leadtek GeForce 2MX 32 MB CD-ROM: TEAC 540E 40X CDRW: TEAC W58E 8x8x32 Capture: BT878a - based Sound: Creative Labs Audigy NIC: Realtek 8029AS Sound System: Altec Lansing CRT: CTX OS: Windows XP SP1 ( 2600 SP1 build 1073) Thanks
cyberbry
Using the hub won't interfere with the MAC address - hubs simply rebroadcast packets, they don't modify or examine them in any way (unlike switches, bridges, and routers). The only thing to look out for is the cabling - since cable modems are generally designed to plug directly into a NIC, they may have given you a crossover cable - if this is the case then you'd have to plug the modem into your hub's uplink port and if there's a switch, make sure it's in crossover mode. If it's a normal straight through CAT 5 cable, then you can plug it into any port on the hub.
