The_Decryptor Veteran Posted November 22, 2005 Veteran Share Posted November 22, 2005 How would you pronounce "fish?"1. Fi-ssh? With a fish sound. 2. El-bow? Like elbow. It's pronounced exactly as it's supposed to be and, therefore, is spelled?! 586838832 lmao. :D
quixotic
This thread is worthless without pics. No wait, this thread is just worthless. For the record, Microsoft is a US company and it probably should be pronounced using American English. In this case the 'i' would be short and it would be pronounced ( phonetically ): viSStuh or viSStah where the first syllable rhymes with the 'hiss' as in the sound a snake makes. Still, it doesn't REALLY matter.
+chorpeac MVC Posted November 22, 2005 MVC Share Posted November 22, 2005 I'll chime in here, I heard it pronounced by microsoft folks with the i , not the e version
dud
People who say "Vista" with a short "i" sound probably pronounce "jalepeno" as "juhLAPano".

It's spelled jalape?o. I happen to pronounce Vista with a short i and I pronounce jalape?o as: hah-lah-payne-yo You're phonetic spelling of jalape?o is horribly off as well. There is no 'uh' sound at the beginning of the word and there is no 'a' sound after the p. One of the nice things about romance languages ( and some other languages as well ) is that their vowel sounds are usually very consistent leading to a uniform pronunciation of the word in places where the language is spoken. You should stay away from things you know nothing about. BTW, I'm American not Spanish. I have no Spanish heritage at all, I just like foreign languages. WorfsPonytail
technically, it is a spanish word and should be pronounced vEsta, but the city that borders where i live is named vista, and has a very large mexican community, and every person ive ever heard say it in my life calls it vIsta. It's an english word derived from italian and spanish words of the same spelling. If the OED doesn't solve this issue, nothing will:
WorfsPonytail
the word vista in spanish directly translates to view in english, or to see... have you ever been to southern california where the hispanic population is 30-40% in most areas? heard of buena vista? chula vista? the actually city of vista? please come here and ask any hispanic person how to pronounce that word. the word in the form "vista", as it is spelled (not "visto") has spanish origins, and is pronounced with the I sounding like an E. if the english later adopted the word, that is another story, but the roots in the spanish language go back way farther than 1817, or 1657. when you go to a mexican resturant, do you ask for a quesA-diLLa, or do you ask for a quesadiYa? http://merriamwebster.com/dictionary/quesadilla the word has officially adopted in the english language...... its pronounciation hasnt changed... why? because we didnt make the word up, they did, and we adopted it. dont be a dumb ignorant redneck... please. There is no 'uh' sound at the beginning of the word and there is no 'a' sound after the p. I have no Spanish heritage at all, I just like foreign languages. 586839802 I don't have an N with a tilde on my keyboard and I don't know how to make it. It's not a matter of spelling, but rather that I don't have a key for it. Other than that, you and I are on the same side on the linguistics; I think you may have just had a reading comprehension slip. I know how to pronounce jalapeno, but I was poking fun at those who don't. In the process of trying to make an ass of someone, don't do it to yourself. Better yet, just be civil and polite.
