Bant Veteran Posted November 23, 2005 Veteran Share Posted November 23, 2005 if i were speaking spanish talking about vista, i would pronounce it with a spanish accent. vista has become an english word, and thus it takes on the english accent when used in an english sentance. consider them seperate words, from seperate languages, with the exact same meaning and spelling :p
turkishdelight
I would pronounce it. Vih-st-ah like an "EHH" sound without the "A" or "E" sound. VIHHSTAH! Yep. Vista with a "short" i sound.
factoid
umm how do i pronounce neowin? This thread is stupid, and a waste of electrons. Call it in whatever accent you know, cause as some US president said Its a damn poor mind that can only think of one way to spell a word just replace the spell with pronounce! It's just a lot of smaller words combined to make up a larger word, sounding out the smaller words is not difficult, sometimes because of stress a word might be pronounced differently. The point people were trying to make when you say they are flaming is that there is a HUGE difference between how the word is pronounced in its native languages and how MICROSOFT WINDOWS (VISTA) is pronounced. If you're talking about the native language; Vista is a word in both Spanish, Italian and Portuguese. It has a different pronunciation in each of those languages. Italian - ( VEE-STAH ) long I and long A Spanish - ( (b)EE-STAH ) the spanish v has a soft b pronunciation. The b sound is not forced, it is very soft. both vowels are long ( I and A ) Portuguese - ( VEE-STUH ) The (a) at the end of portuguese words are normally pronounced as ( UH ) - The same sound an American would make when pronouncing the last a in America. They all mean sight or view. Now if you're talking about the way Microsoft intends it to be pronounced is the same way vista is pronounced in American English, with a short i and usually a short a. Some americans pronounce it with a long a at the end: viss-tah, while some pronounce it with a short a at the end: viss-tuh. In any event, the main vowel in question would be the I which is pronounced short in the American version.

y0sh
When they first announced the name, I said Veesta mostly because that's how you would pronounce it in Spanish. I'm getting more used to Vista now, though. Exactly the same! First Veesta, then Vihsta. Grew on me.
