kizzaaa
I was curious wat type of firewall protection people here use. I use the firewall protection from my router and I dont use any software-based protection (Windows Firewall is also off). So..?

+theblazingangel MVC Posted November 24, 2005 MVC Share Posted November 24, 2005 a hardware firewall (inc. those in routers) is not enough. you have no protection against outbound connections from malicious software on your computer. even the addition of anti-malware software is not as effective as it can only protect against known threats. a software firewall is absolutely essential. anti-malware software is a recommended addition. a hardware firewall is a useful device (especially for a corporation), however it should only be used in addition to a software firewall. i posted an explanation of this yesterday here. see post #12, and #19 in responce to #18. Phemo
I use a 'proper' business level firewall, a NetScreen 5GT ADSL Wireless in fact. ?600 of goodness for free thanks to work :)) I have it locked down fairly tight, even the outgoing policies so I don't bother with a software firewall either. grahamwilmott
I use a software firewall on all my devices, and a well config'ed hardware router / firewall / NAT all-in-one job... Seems to cope with all things I chuck at it, but Common Sense is still needed.

Elliot B.
I don't use or need a firewall. Then again, I split my connection between two computers using a router, which I can imagine is a hardware firewall. Hmm, it is in DMZ mode, so again, I guess I'm not using a firewall of any kind. Can't be bothered with configuring ports for my multitude of games, P2P and torrent applications, DMZ is just easier.
Borbus
I use windows xp built in firewall and i'm behind a NAT. Those two plus common sense for a year or so has proven to be quite safe.

Elliot B.
Anyone who doesn't use either, or better yet, both will eventually experience pain  586855411[/snapback] Hardly. I don't want to bother with ZoneAlarm etc. CONSTANTLY annoying me with messages or a hardware firewall limiting access to my programs becasue of port blocking (and it takes a long time finding out what ports programs/games etc. use all the time).
