Hard Drive Problem

Recommended Posts

I think I am about to die... My 80 gig 'Storage' drive that I put all my music, movies, etc on is acting weird. All of of sudden it started to disapear from Windows, it will just disapear without any warning and I have to restart to get it back. Does this mean that it is about to fail or something. It is maybe 3 months old and I haven't had any problems. I tried to run checkdisk but it disapeared while I was checking it so it couldn't finish, I am going to try it in the recovery console mode and see if I can finish it there. Also, in my 'Admin Tools - Comp Managment - Disk Managment' it says 'Status: Healthy (At Risk)'. Any insight would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Use this time wisely, backup all the important stuff before it does fail.......... :) , like burn it on to CD-R or Removable Storage.......

BTW is it an IBM drive?

Hope this helps.......... :)

Radish.

It isnt an IBM... I also don't think I have ever heard of a drive just going 'offline' like this while in windows. I dont think it is my cables but I guess I should check those to be sure.

Well it is deffinetly a Windows problem because it doesn't disappear in the recover console and I ran one of those thurough scan disk checks before it booted into windows and that took about 14 hours without any failures. Does that help anyone out with what they might think it is?

Any time a drive is acting funny back up the stuff and don't restart the computer unless necessary. And make sure you make regular back ups as well. I usually have 2 CDs which are each backed up. One has documents and the other downloads. Makes it possible to recover from if one CD is lost, scratched, or unuseable.

I'm just wondering if anyone else with those 80 to 120 + GIG hard drives have been having problems as well. I can understand data density is increasing but these drives seem a bit too big. Makes me uncomfortable thinking of filling a drive w/ 120 GB. I'd rather get a few smaller drives.
