0 BroChaos Veteran Posted July 29, 2002 Veteran Share Posted July 29, 2002 is there really a "best" advanced notepad-type program? or are they basically all the same?
0 threetonesun
I used to use Arachnophilia a long time ago for text editing, but it appears it hasn't changed since then...probably just as good though. And no, there is very little difference between the text editors (as far as I have seen). Really, it just comes down to layout/features (extent of color coding/checking, etc) for your choice on which is better.
0 CrimsonBlur
I started on Notepad (still use it). Then, when I realized color-coding is your best friend, I started using CoffeeCup HTML Editor. It's just a text editor with color-coding and some stuff in the interface to use as shortcuts to writing out long code. It also has a preview pane that is pretty convenient... But I must say that now I use DreamWeaver MX almost 100% of the time (plus Photoshop 7, Fireworks MX and Flash MX). You can do all of the coding yourself by telling the program not to add anything, and it generally won't anyway. It has many advanced connectability features, automatically uploads files on save, connects to your MySQL databases through PHP, etc. Excellent program. 0 StOnD
I perfer DreamWeaver MX, but most of the time I have to use FrontPage 2002 at work, solely so the less educated people there can edit them too. I hate FrontPage, I bet even Microsoft don't use it to make their website.

Once you know how to do tables, frames and such liek the back of your hands, then why bother wasting time handing coding that stuff all the time? 0 AJCrowley Esq
My personal experience is that Dreamweaver (and all other visual editors) produce truly horrible code. The best text based editor is Homesite - it has support for just about anything you want - ASP, JSP, PHP, Perl, JavaScript, VBScript, Coldfusion, Java. I cannot recommend this program enough. Use Photoshop ( Slice 'n' Dice boys and girls ) and Dreamweaver hand code it cause no wysiwyg editor does it right, and its faster to hand code it if you can do it like the back of you hand ;) plus there is not one wysiwyg editor that does dhtml worth ****
