Photoshop Crashes

Question

I have been having a problem with photoshop for some time now. It seems that it always crashes when it's doing something that requires a high amount of CPU power. I've tried finding ways to fix it, but nothing has worked. Every version of Photoshop 5.5 and up does it under every Windows OS 98 and up on this machine, and Photoshop is the only program that does it. Right now I have Photoshop 7 installed on Win2k and it always crashes at Reading Styles when it loads up.

When Photoshop crashes, the whole system becomes completely unresponsive. What can I do about it?

Thanx in advance.

Don't have the problem here with PS7 and XP.

So here is my two suggestions:

a) get the legal version of PS7 :p

b) if you have the legal version, get more RAM.

Photoshop 7 and Win2K are both legal, and the machine has 384 MB of ram so that can't be the problem.

The machine that is having the problem is as follows:

AcerPower (an older model)

Pentium 3 500 MHz

384 MB RAM

18 GB Maxtor HDD

Win2K Pro

RivaTNT2 32MB with latest detonators installed.

All versions of photoshop 5.5 and up run just fine on another identical (except it has 256 MB RAM) machine I have, so I'm completely stumped.

StOnD, what's the CPU in your PC? Perhaps, the "complicated" task is too taxing on your CPU and the heat generated is causing it to lock up. This is most likely in overclocked systems.

Go to:

C:Documents and SettingsApplication DataAdobePhotoshop7.0Adobe Photoshop 7.0 Settings

and try deleting some files, starting with:

Adobe Photoshop 7.0 Prefs.psp

Restart PS after you delete a settings file to see if it works.

Sometimes a corrupt settings file can stop PS from loading.
