My New CD-RW Is Burning Coasters!

Recommended Posts

What is used to be:

E: Traxdata 8/4/32x CD-RW

F: Creative 52Xmx CD-ROM

What it is now...

E: Traxdata 8/4/32x CD-RW

F: Lite-ON 32/12/40x CD-RW

However, my new Lite-ON CD-RW is creating coasters. They appeared to burn right in Nero, so I continued to burn 4 more CDs. Didn't even think of checking them! So, I put the first one in... no luck! Put in 2, 3 and 4, none work! When I try to access them, Windows says:

"Windows cannot read from this disk. The disk might be corrupt, or it could be using a format that is not compatible with Windows"

Anyone know wazzup with this? :(

Ok look on the bottom of the disks to see if they burned ... try both cd-readers ... try resetting your computer then reading the disks.

And yea, illegal copies of cdrwin (and others) can burn coasters.

just out of interest, why did you keep the other writer in instead of the 52x cdrom !?

and what kind of disc are you burning

disc to disc should be half the reader speed (to be safe)

audio should be half the burner speed (to be safe)

are the discs you're using certified 32x discs ?

i have blank, cheap discs that work 70% of the time at 40x, but 100% at 30x, as they are unbranded, i do not know the max speed for them

i owned that drive, and had no problems with it whatsoever (i upgraded from the 32x writer)

make sure DMA is on, if its not you dont stand a chance of burning a working disc above 10x

you could always try a firmware update, LiteON

i have the 40125 W btw

oh yeah, use disc at once whenever possible, and dont use DAO /96

its a legal version of nero, lite-on burners come with it (even oem)

OK look on the bottom of the disks to see if they burned

- Can't see any distinguishing lines, so it might not even be burned!

Try both cd-readers... try resetting your computer then reading the disks.

- Tried both suggesting, neither work :(

Just out of interest, why did you keep the other writer in instead of the 52x cdrom!?

- Huh? I kept the Traxdata, because the 52x wasn't a writer

And what kind of disc are you burning? Disc to disc?

- White Label 700 Mb CD-R Disks - and I'm putting DivX on them from my HDD

Are the disks you're using certified 32x discs?

- Yeah :D

I have blank, cheap discs that work 70% of the time at 40x, but 100% at 30x, as they are unbranded, i do not know the max speed for them

- I don't really wanna limit the speed since I payed a lot for the extra money

I owned that drive, and had no problems with it whatsoever (i upgraded from the 32x writer)

- Strange

Make sure DMA is on, if its not you dont stand a chance of burning a working disc above 10x

- How do I enable it?

You could always try a firmware update

- Don't wanna risk it just yet

I have the 40125 W btw

- Huh? That a model number?

Oh yeah, use disc at once whenever possible, and dont use DAO /96

- I'm using the default settings. Worked fine for my Traxdata

To check for DMA goto hardware manager/device manager > IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers right click the controller your CDRW is on (probably second channel if your hard drive is on first) > select properties > advanced settings tab. You'll see a little thing to select PIO or DMA mode and something that shows what it is currently running.

oh, and when you burn the disc and look on the bottom, it should change color slightly like slightly darker. if that isn't happening take the drive back to get it exchanged!

I got the same message from Nero. Are you using overburning? Mine went to 703MB, Nero said all the files were verified, but XP said it was corrupt :s. I took out the CD, put it back in, waited, then it came up fine. This was on XP. So don't use them as coasters (yet), they might not be currupt after all ;).

Just checked the CDs I burned with my Traxdata, and they haven't really gone darker so that's no help :(

Also, DMA is enabled where avaliable. I bought the drive from www.121cdr.co.uk so I can't really 'take it back'

Tsk ... tsk ... first of all the site looks like a friggin scam, second of all you shouldn't buy hardware online that isn't strictly garunteed by seller or manufacturer, and third a local computer shop probably has just as good of prices!

1) I've bought 4 packs of 100 CD-R CDs over the last 6 months with no problem. I have also ordered a CD case that hold 260 CDs, but I wasn't in to collect it. Apparently, they left it in a 'safe part' of the outside of my house. My house ISNT safe outside! (meaning no safe places to hide the package). We assumed it was stolen, and a quick email later, they resent it!

2) What other shop do you know that can get you a Lite-ON 32/12/40x CD-R for ?40

3) Someone here on NeoWin said they bought one from there too, and it worked fine

aspi drivers up to date?

Nero can check your discs to see if data was actually burnt onto them, it will also return blank if they are blank still.

Very common to forget to uncheck the 'simulation' button when burnin with nero.

LTR-32123S (32X/12X40X) CD-RW here.

Make sure you are using version 4.60 of Adaptec's ASPI layer and not the newer 4.70.

If it still doesn't work, then you will have to update the firmware as andrewfee already recommended.

UPDATE: Just copied an Audio CD On-The-Fly... and it worked flawlessly! This gets weirder! Why can I copy from another CD, but not the HDD??

How can I check what version of the Adaptec's ASPI Layer I currently have installed, and where can I download v4.60?

Apparently, I don't have it installed. Strange, cause I can make CDs with my Traxdata fine! Anyway, which one do I install? 1.60 as suggested by ManMountiain, or the latest ones (4.71)?

This is totally weird man. I am using a 32x12x40 speed Lite On with no ASPI stuff installed and it works fine, I've never burnt a coaster. I think you need to simply format or reinstall Nero, make sure you have the latest version.
