mparter
I'm trying to fix my mates PC. The problem as he describes it is that it freezes after about 30 mins, which made me think it was an overheating problem. I reformated, installed new RAM and a newer graphics card and everything seemed OK. I left it running for about an hour no probs. But when I went to unpak some wav files for a ripped game it hung during unpacking them! The PC just totally freezes and needs to be reset. The files are OK because they worked on my machine. So now I'm maybe thinking it's something to do with the Hard Drive? Can anybody help, please?
YahoKa
You're probably right that it's a heat problem ... so check the CPU temperatures, check the cpu heat-sink-fan, etc.
mparter
I'm not to sure about a heat problem now as it does it when the PC is cold! I've updated the BIOS so it can't be that. It only hangs now when there's intense hard drive activity, i.e. when I'm deleting loads of files, or decompressing files. Sometimes it stutters along and manages to finish the job but most of the time it just hangs the whole PC. Anybody got any suggestions?
YahoKa
Ahh well in that case his HDD is probably failing.
mparter
It's only a month old! And there's no other problems reading or writing to the disk. I'm thinking it could be a driver problem (Bus Mastering, IDE drivers, etc)

MaxPayne1357
Edit: sorry i didnt read the whole post.. My best guess would be that you are having an irq conflict, perhaps clearing cmos would help. BTW, Have you tried booting into safe-mode yet?
sp00nman
Your PC is freezing? Light it on fire, that'll keep it warm. :D Sorry, it was stupid but I couldn't resist! :D
mparter
Yahoka, It's a Soltek SL-75KAV motherbaord, the specs for the board are here It's a 20Gb Western Digital hard drive, and it's urrently running Windows 98 SE, although I tried to install Windows XP but it kept freezing at the start of the setup! I'm thinking along the lines of what MaxPayne1357 said.
v0rt3x
It seems to be a HD problem, I think you should try to exchange the HD for a new one if possible.
