The Dapper Drake Flight 2 is the second alpha release of Ubuntu 6.04, and with this new alpha release comes a whole host of excellent new features. Improvements have been made all around such as faster system boot up times, faster GNOME start up times, improvements to the user interface, a shiny new optimized kernel, GNOME 2.13.3, OpenOffice.org 2.0.1 RC2, Firefox 1.5 and much, much more.

I'm looking at the Kubuntu screenshots, and I notice that Konqueror has tabs. Is that a KDE 3.5 feature or exclusively Kubuntu 6.04?

I think that is in KDE 3.5 in general.

Hmm, well, I don't have it. In fact, I have KDE 3.5.0 Level "a", whatever the difference is

Tha last time I used Kubuntu I didn't like it, but the new version looks very nice :)

This is getting ridiculous. I just finally decided to go with Breezy and now they're already releasing a new version and the fact that it's 6 means it must be a major update. Why can't they be consistant in their relase like SuSE.

They release a new version every 6 months, stop crying.

This is a beta, alpha maybe even.

indeed. The version 6.04 denotes that it will be released as a final on 2006.04 (april). So don't be surprised at the version number. 4 years from now, we expect to have version 10.

Windows is currently at version 5 (XP)

If you stay current with apt you'll never need to "reinstall".

I just got some Ubuntu CDs in the mail. Is it possible to install it using those and then just change it to KDE....making it kUbuntu i guess?? Never used Linux before, but figured I'd dabble in it. Also, what's the big difference between Gnome and KDE??

Runs like crap on Dell Optiplex GX110 (intel 810 chipset w/gfx). Speed is fine, but the GUI is hosed for some reason. Its alpha software, so it was expected.

Yeah, I'm going to steer clear of it until it becomes a bit more stable.

We have a sticky I started that covers a bit about some of the available Window Managers and Desktop Environments available in Linux. It is missing Gnome, which is about as large as KDE, but has a different user interface philosophy. Pick the one you like best. You can have multiple Window Managers installed and use any of them you like.

Here is the sticky: https://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=330414

Back then, there was a classic comparison between the 2:

KDE looked like a Fisher Pricer toy, Gnome looked professional.

Now today you can say:

Endorsed by Linus Torvalds (my hero in a way):

KDE

Not Endorsed by Linus Torvalds (my hero in a way):

Gnome
