Buying a new hi-fi

I'm a bit fed up of listening to music through my laptop speakers, and my brother's broken my headphones (one is considerably weaker than the other making it quite painful to listen to anything for a long time), so I've decided to invest in a new hi-fi.

But I know nothing about hi-fis and thus would appreciate some help!

I'm looking more for sound clarity and quality especially at lower volumes than mere power, my budget is about ?70 maximum (around 40 is probably better) so probably going for mini hi-fi's rather than the full-scale models (also easier to take up to uni).

And wooden ones would be nice, they look incredible:pp

Any ideas?

The Philips MCM530/37 is a good model to look at. Small, good sound for what it is, and has a usb connection to enable you to connect an external HDD and stream mp3s off of.

Mmm I don't really like its looks much to be honest... And I don't really need the USB connectivity, I'll probably use the thing mostly connected to my computer anyway!

Any other suggestions?
