Winternals Administrator Pak 5.0 - Locksmith!

Question

This question is the byproduct of a Windows problem I'm having.

(The topic for that problem is here: https://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=413927&st=15 )

Because this problem is software specific and not primarily relevant to Windows, I've decided to ask it here.

Essentially - I need to change my admin password on a Windows partition such that I can log into the Recovery Console.

However - when I use Winternals Administrator Pak 5.0 to change the adminstrator password - I run into a few problems (possibly misunderstandings?)

Essentially, here's what I do:

>I boot into Winternals. Select the partition that Windows is on.

>From there I go into Locksmith. I select the user "Administrator" and change the password.

>It says something along the lines of "password successfully changed"

>From there I reboot into my Windows setup CD - it asks for the "adminstrator password" - I enter the password that has been successfully changed in Winternals; then I get "password is not valid"

What is even odder is that when I reboot back into Winternals and try to change the password again, it says that I must reboot in order for the previous password to be used. It also says that if I continue, the previous change will be discarded.

Thanks in advance for any help

No - I can't boot into Windows

Essentially this is my situation:

I attempted to do a repair installation. In some wierd freak accident it froze after it copied setup files. Now, whenever I boot - it attempts to go into windows only to have a black screen and a cursor.

Nonetheless, I need to get into the Recovery Console to attempt to try a possible solution that was suggested - the "fixboot" command.

Boot into your install, back up the files you need from the Administrators account that you have previously used. While you are in that account, delete the admin account, and when you reboot and new account will produced by windows. If the account was buggered by a bad install, you are not going to fix it with Winternals as far as I know. BTDT and failed. If someone else here is successful, I'll be watching to learn.

was your problem solved and if yes, then how

why not create a new post with the question you have (this will probably get locked as it could be deemed as circumventing security).

petri has a good write up on changing the AD administrator password if that is what you are after.

I think what you should try first is the following-- boot into a live linux-- then rename the Administrator folder in users-- windows should recreate it....also you may think about just recovering your files and then do a fresh install.

best of luck..
